Hi all,
my friend is using BSNL broadband in Punjab using quidway Wa1003A (its a ADSL modem capable of connecting via USB/LAN/wifi).
He is using Kubutnu 11.10 and want to use internet on it. we tried to setup using pppoeconf and KDE's network manager. but pppoeconf is unable to detect the modem.
is anyone using this modem on Linux over LAN cable or wifi? or how to set up this modem on Linux?

Reminds me of struggle in getting USB modem working under Linux a long time back. Could not get it working but there was a project from France about this. Unfortunately the modem I had was listed as not workable. Google bhai se poocho.

:-(

if you cannot find your modem, you could use dmesg messages. But if you are using the LAN port to connect to it, it most likely should not give a lot of problem. Does your ethernet hardware otherwise get detected. Can you use ifconfig to setup your LAN

I too had problems setting up bsnl
my device has software fro 32 bit but Im using 64 bit linux
so I cudnt install that software
anyway I found this nice post
it just solved my problem
http://www.bsnlevdo.in/evdo/setup-bsnl-evdo-usb-modem-in-linux/

The post is old and I didnt have to do that all procedure,
all u need to do is

check
lsusb

if u can find ur device listed

go ahed and check

sudo tail -f /var/log/messages

I found my device showing ttyUSB0,ttyUSB1,ttyUSB2,ttyUSB3,

In that post its only ttyUSB0
so I had to try All 4 of them, to do that
edit /etc/wvdail.conf

[Dialer Defaults]
New PPPD = yes
ISDN = 0
Phone = #777
Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
Username = 165
Password = 165
Stupid Mode = 1

then run wvdail as root

and yes u need to install wvdail if u dont have it

its not useful for me as he is using internet using ADSL modem not 3G USB modem.
I will have to use method similar to given in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ADSLPPPoE

He can ask for the ISP details from the BSNL office itself. :)
