An interesting error (or least unexpected behaviour) was reported to me.
I wanted to raise these questions here before filing any issues.
The "error" was that in a descriptive entry, using the auto-complete
feature for repository, if you type in the full name of an existing
repository but do *not* select from the pull-down list, a new repository
entry will be created.
This raises a few possibilities:
- ideally, if the value keyed in matches a unique existing value, the
link would be made behind the scenes, rather than a duplicate entry
created. Or prompt the user to indicate if a new entry was intended. Of
course this may not be a simple enhancement
- perhaps this behaviour could be noted as part of the help text
suggested in issue 1018. For example, in Windows applications (I'm
thinking particularly of Access), users would be accustomed to an
auto-complete feature automatically selecting the matching entry. In
cases where a user is copying and pasting from another source, this
would come up as well. I.e. it might not just be a matter of a user
typing faster than the auto-complete widget.
A couple ideas relating to institution-specific user accounts (which is
where this came up):
- if a user only has rights on the descriptions of one repository,
ideally that repository would be the default in descriptions
- I wonder if it would be possible to have an easier way to set up
institution-specific user accounts. For example, being able to set
editor rights, or contributor rights (or any other group), for a
particular institution, rather than needing to set those rights manually
(see issue 1710).

I've encountered issues with repository too. We are constantly accidentally creating duplicate repository entries, which I periodically have to delete. In our case, however, we *are* selecting from the auto-complete list. Sometimes this succeeds but other times a duplicate is created.
