Can anyone tell me the difference in sound between the tekero and
vielle? I understand the physical differences. I have also listened to
a ton of samples. And, what it comes down to is that the tekero seems
to have a deeper, muted sound. But other than that, it all seems like
a fiddle/violin distinction where the music played is different rather
than the instrument's sound. Any help would be appreciated. On the
cusp of buying one or the other.

The difference in sound is as much to do with what you like and hear yourself. It has nothing to do with fiddle/violin as they are the same instrument. Vielle  and tekero are not the same beast. Both are used in classical, rock and traditional music. Both can equally sound fabulous and appalling, living in this part of the world both of my vielles can sound good and bad on the same day in winter. You pays your money and takes your choice. Different people will tell you this is better or that is, listen to recordings by players, on this list for example Melissa the loud or Patrick Bouffard. Its not easy to play to begin with but once you have cracked how to do it..........................it becomes very addictive to play.  Good Luck     JON

I think it's like the Rabbit and the Hare.... both are excellent
instruments in the right hands... if set up and adjusted
well....beauty is in the ear of the beholder...i'm currently building
a Tekero for myself, it's loosely based on a Budpest instrument i
restored a couple of years back.. i love the sound of the Tekero and
consider the buzzing system simply better than the Chien...but again
that's all personal choice :)

I wouldn't say that the buzzing bridge system is better, myself. It really depends on the kind of music you're going to play. The Hungarian system works really well for syncopated twos, but for threes and even fours it doesn't work so well. The technique is totally different for the two: the Hungarian dog uses the wrist to control it while the French-style uses the fingers. I prefer playing the Hungarian style myself, but it won't work for everything.

I play threes and sixes on my tekero, here for instance:

Although I don't have much experience with French instruments, so I can't really compare.
