Dagestan: Man Detained in Special Operation in Makhachkala Has Been Released

The Human Rights Center “Memorial” has learned that on May 21, 2012, Abdurakhman Magomedov, who was detained on May 19 during a special operation in Makhachkala, was released from the Kirovsky police department in the Republic of Dagestan.  From the very beginning, Magomedov assured security officials that he had not been involved in a terrorist act.  He went to the house that they had blockaded, suspecting it of hiding members of a gang, in order to congratulate the owners on the birth of their child.

The criminal case against him was not opened, and thus the law enforcement agencies recognized his complete innocence.

We remind you that on May 18, law enforcement officers blockaded a building on Yubileynaya Street in Makhachkala, where several persons suspected of organizing a terrorist act on May 3, 2012 (http://www.memo.ru/eng/news/2012/05/21/2105121.html) were located.  In addition to two men, there were three women and two small children.  After negotiations, on the night of May 18, the women, children and Abdurakhman Magomedov left the building to meet the authorities.  A militant who refused to surrender was killed in the clashes.  The women and children were released from the Kirovsky police department after questioning, but Abdurakhman Magomedov was detained.  On the morning of May 19, more than one hundred friends and relatives of the detained man gathered outside the police department building, demanding that a lawyer be allowed to see him.  By the evening, the confrontation had escalated into clashes.  People in the crowd threw bricks and stones at police, and the police fired over the heads of the crowd.  As a result, more than ten people were detained and convicted of public administration offenses (, http://www.memo.ru/eng/news/2012/05/22/2205122.htmlhttp://www.memo.ru/eng/news/2012/05/22/2205123.html.
