Dagestan: Court Hearing in Case of Beating of Teenager
Scheduled for May 25
The court hearing of the case of the beating of the minor Makhmud
Akhmedov by a police officer from the Shamilsky police department,
Magomed Magomedov, will take place at 11 am on May 25, 2012 in the
Shamilsky Regional Court, in the village of Khebda in the Republic
of Dagestan.
We remind you that on May 18, 2010, the teenager was detained by
three police officers from the Shamilsky police department and
severely beaten in the department. Makhmud received contusion to the
brain and lost the hearing of one ear. On May 20, 2011, the police
officers were found guilty of abuse of power (Item A, Part 3,
Article 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and were
given suspended sentences from 2.6 to 4 years in prison, and banned
from working in the police service for one year. However, Akhmed's
family considered this punishment too lenient and appealed against
the decision in the Supreme Court of the Republic of Dagestan. The
court found a gross violation of procedural rules in the case, and
on October 18, 2011, it was returned to the prosecutor’s office. In
January 2012, the materials on the criminal case involving Sh.
Magomedaliev and G. Nurudinov were allocated to another hearing
