Hey all,

This post is for Bay Area Burners who need to build a yurt for the Playa. Having built mine last year, and intending to build another this year, I wonder how many people are in the same position--and how much redundant effort is involved in everybody doing it for themselves. I know I spent close to a week assembling tools, doing layout, laboriously cutting, taping edges, etc. etc. etc. and finally cleaning up (GAH!), all in my little driveway with my pathetic collection of tools.

Suppose we yurt-Burners (hmm, dodgy naming there...) joined forces (and expertise, and tools...) and set up an assembly line to build generic yurts. How many of you would be up for such an endeavor?

Cheers,
Steve Upstill

That would be great. A bit of an assembly line could make building them much faster.
I am moving to SF about July 20th and need to build this years yurt.
I've done a new one every year for the last 5 and shipped them from the east coast.

Anyone else up for building the H13?

Beaker.

I'm in Berkeley, have the classic Hexayurt but with 6' sidewalls and an arched front door.  The only mods for this year are the addition of a sill-iron across the doorway to keep the two segments from spreading and/or getting out of alignment.  The sill-iron will be taped to the wall from underneath (before assembly of course).  The whole unit is packaged up as three two-piece sidewalls, plus two roof-halves taped up to unfold.  Then I just have to add three pieces of tape to the sides, and one long piece across the top (while it's still on the ground).

Oh, and I'll be putting in a couple small windows in the upper sidewall using 24" x 8" Lexan inlayed and taped into the walls.

H13 seems like the way to go. Brilliant mod.

The idea for a building bee is right on.

I'd also love to figure out a communal way to get the yurts to the
playa.
The bulk is a real blocker for ride sharing.

Somebody up for hauling a featherlite trailer full of hexayurt
packages, and we all chip in on costs?

Ideas?

you should all  look at the Playatech website also.  they have EXCELLENT furniture made from plywood that breaks down very small.  Check it out.

We've made benches, tables, chairs, etc and they work awesome on the playa.

just remember, the holes in the legs, they look kinda weird... thos are for a piece of rebar to keep it from blowing around if it is not wind protected area.

Since you are in SF, perhaps you can go down and talk to the BMORG and they may be able to help you on space.  i figure, if you volunteer to help the build the man, then perhaps there is an extra corner of the warehouse to do the hexayurt building / storage.

Just a thought...  :-)

I'd really love that, seeing a hexayurt factory at Burning Man HQ.

Now, let me put out a shout out for Thermax HD, which will likely make a 10 year plus lifespan hexayurt. It's just like the regular polyiso material, but with a really tough (think coke can thickness) metal skin on both sides.

I believe the minimum purchase is about 5 hexayurt's worth, and it is available - some people did a buy a year or two ago? How have those yurts been, folks?

Reduced fire risk and much, much better environmental performance because they'll last and last and last.

Glad to see its all happening,

Vinay

(sounds of uproarious laughter...)

The BMorg had a ranch north of the playa where it's chock-full of trailers and containers and equipment that are the infrastructure of Burningman.  Not much goes from hither (SF) to yon (TTITD).

And I can just see us wielding our panels into the new offices in downtown San Francisco right on Market Street.  Forget about parking!  :)  Just sayin'

I love the idea of a trailer from SF to the playa.  I need 30 inches of 4'x8' space for my beast (I have an extra panel for an interior wall separating our boudoir).

Well then, I guess space (hopefully with a door so we don't have to do it all in one day) is the first issue. Anybody got any other ideas? Any contacts at American Steel?

Cheers,
Steve

Sorry, but if i recall, in 2010 they had a very large warehouse factory over in Oakland, where they built the man himself for that year.   That is what i was referring too

They also build the temple over there sometimes too.. Although it is being built in Reno this year.

ah, good luck with finding out about using it.  Other possibilities include the place the Flaming Lotus Girls build their stuff... name slips my mind... in West Oakland.

Well, damn, that would be fantastic, thank you Jeff.

I'm really glad to see active involvement from you guys as vendors of tape, and I don't mean you sending us a case of tape, I mean the fact you're here helping out and being involved. Very much in favor of partnership between hexayurt builders and various component vendors, keep up the good work :)

well, thats what i ean, there is TONS of warehouse space out there for sharing, perhaps even build one for the host, and then they will REALLY love you.

Also a good way to get into a GREAT theme camp, learn fire art, etc... to really gift into it

we built this last year for our camp:
