@ Jason S: I have a pdf up on appropedia. And it needs to be updated.
The camp danger hinges are all the same on the roof. The walls are also the same tight/loose hinges. But there's two ways to do the walls. I can now safely say that a simpler (ie: more pre-taping, less on-playa work) will stand 2012 playa winds without trouble.  I'll get on it, boss.

I highly recommend that you do some experimentation before you begin
production. I'm having an aweful lot of trouble now that I'm working on the
loose hinges. Instead of pre-taping your edges (to avoid inadequate
adhesion), and instead of gluing directly onto bare foam, I'd suggest that
you prepare your foam edges with a coating of contact cement. Basically,
put a layer of contact cement all over your edges, let it dry completely
(overnight), then do another layer and apply the vinyl. This seems to work
out a lot better and does not cause as much bubbling and non-adhesion as
    might otherwise occur.

Remember to go slowly, and have patience. If you used BFT, you'd eventually
have to spend time to replace it. Since you will not be replacing BFT down
the line, you will be spending that time now, applying a more permanent
solution. You are doing the exact opposite of the saying "never enough time
to do it right the first time, but always time to do it twice". This will
probably take twice the time upfront.

Good Luck! Can't wait to see how your project turns out!

Julie, do you have links for all of your PDFs collected somewhere? I should put them on the homepage!

Do the hexayurt veterans recommend tape or vinyl?

By vinyl I assume you mean vinyl+contact cement?

I am doing mine that way. I can give you a little feedback.

 1. it is definitely more time consuming -- lots of waiting around for cement to dry. It is also hard to do a whole strip at once  -- so it usually takes a couple cycles to get a whole strip on.

 2. contact cement vapor is explosive, heavier than air, and harmful if inhaled. So that means you need to have a good workplace. Not your living room or basement. On the side of the can it warns you to turn off your furnace and stuff.

If you don't have the right type of workspace for the cementing (like a backyard?) then I wouldn't try it.

Whether it is going to be worth the extra time yet -- I don't know.

For #1:
You do want two people when assembling things with glue - stretching the strips in the air above their landing zone. You can try to pipeline the operation - have some panels dry while you attach the strips to others, the glue has pretty decent working time of at least 20 min in fair weather, and you can always re-wet things if you missed your window.

And for #2 my partner in this process was a smoker :) so it's not that flammable actually :)

My one year outdoor test (in California :)) for the contact cement is mostly positive - a few feet did peel off, but nothing compared to almost all of the bdf tape i did use on a few panels.

I should mention that I was not using vinyl, but cordura strips with a fair number of zippers sewn on. Cordura is pretty much impossible to glue up, so I very impressed by the contact cement method.

Cheers,

Vladimir
