We built and put together a semi-folding 8' H13, using 1" polyisocyanurate
panels, but we had problems getting the pieces to line up well, and to
stay up.
I wonder if anyone has experience and advice to share.

Note I didn't fully tape the sections together, instead using short
pieces of tape
to hold the panels together. Obviously this wouldn't do for real
construction;
this was just to try it out in low-wind environment.

Note also I used the original Julie Danger design, where the big flat
roof panel
is attached to the rest of the curved part, rather than the revised design,
where it is attached to the end-wall kites. It seems plausible the revised
design might be more stable.

What happened was the curved part of the roof stayed pretty tight and
in-place
on the walls without problems. However, one or both of the end-wall
kites (i.e.
the piece you'd put the door top in plus the attached piece) would fall down
if left unattended. Also, one of the big rectangular roof sections would
slide down
a few inches. And when when trying to tape things together it would be
difficult
to avoid gaps.

No doubt with sufficient tape the thing could be held together, but it
does seem
to "not want to". So my questions:

(*) Would it be worthwhile re-do the roof sections to use the revised
design?
Is there any experience to suggest this is easier and/or more stable?

(*) Or should I just give up and settle for a regular H12, given that
this is
my first hexayurt (and my first Burning Man)? It will probably be for
only 3 of us,
so a H12 is certainly plenty spacious - though 2 of us are over 6' tall,
so the
extra height is nice.

(*) Any particular advice for how the pieces of the roof should be aligned
and made as stable and tight as possible?

Hi!

We're on the same boat! We're building our H13 today. The ease with which the roof is attached, and how it holds together is a concern I've had, too. Thanks a lot for sharing your experience!

My plan is to try a two-piece roof made entirely with tight hinges. I basically just combined the diamond piece to the bigger piece with the full panel. The tight hinges on the full panel are both outward, and all the other hinges are alternately inward and outward from there on. I'm attaching some pictures of the model. The less taping done on the playa, the better, which is why I'm attempting a two-piece roof. Also, all-tight-hinges on the roof could provide better isolation, and possibly stability. But it's difficult to estimate stability before building the actual yurt, so I have my concerns.

How many people were you when you were putting the roof together? Did you combine the entire roof, and then tape it to the walls, or did you tape partial roofs on them? What do you think about the two-piece roof idea? Could it possibly hold together better like this?

I'll send an update once we're done (hopefully tonight).

We put the entire roof together, before we moved it over to the walls.
While we didn't tape the roof sections all that well, it was solid enough
that we were able to move it without too much difficulty, IIRC.

I believe we had 4-5 guys to move the roof and attach it to the walls.
Fewer (3?) when putting the roof together.

If it works, it does seem the 2-piece roof model would be easier to
install and make stable.

I found the H13 roof pretty stable in wood - build from the back forwards, then at the end the two vertical boards hold up the roof peak. Seemed to be easy to build and very stable. When we lifted it up on to the walls we had a bit of drama with the point of the roof falling past the level we wanted it at, but that was fixed with a bit of brute force and a lot of screws ;)

Works good

My friend was very sick, and I was only able to do one half-roof and one three-wall piece by myself on Monday. It all seemed to work and fit together really well, and all tight-hinges on the roof does seem to make the design stronger. But I was not yet able to put the full roof together, so I cannot comment on the stability of the completed structure.

Has anyone else attempted a two-piece roof with all-camp-danger-tight-hinges on a semi-folding H13?
