So I was all excited to get some cheap cardboard to make some real
sized mock ups of different hexayurts. I figured it was easier then
insulation board and the cost was also great. Last time I was at
Blick Art Store it was about $3 for a 4 X 8 foot sheet. I get there
and they no longer carry that size, D'oh!!! 40" X 60" is the only
size they have now.
So 3 stores later and a quick net search and now my $3 sheets are $8
each + S/H

I am asking if anyone knows of cheap cardboard in 4 X 8 sheets. I may
have to buy smaller and use lots more tape. 4' X 4' would work too if
it was cheap enough.

I am going to research thru the archives as well for Honeycomb
Cardboard. The insulation alternative. I would like to get started
early on BM shelters for this year. Having cardboard would allow
greater creativity for the outside. 08 BM hexayurts(mine included)
were very 'space age' and not very fun looking on the outside. Full
Murals on the outside would have been much cooler. The roof should
definitely be Mylared for heat reflection.

So I am replying to my own thread. Bad form I know.
Did some more research.
Last year a thread went on about getting Honeycomb Pads(Cardboard) in
Cali.
So I went back to that thread and contacted one of the companies
listed. Looks like the materials have doubled in cost.

A 1" honeycomb pad in 48" X 96" sizing is now about $27.00 each from
http://www.deltapackaging.com/Honeycomb.html
Anyone find them any cheaper?

Let me know.

More bad form.
I was unable to get cardboard in the proper size.
I was able to get 40" X 60" for about $1.50 each at Blick.
So I built an almost scale model about 60% volume and 90% height(I
didn't cut the boards for the height.)

http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/Y1y5z7D_elKBMyrKTadEDw?feat=directlink
The above is an image of it. Oh and I built it badly by myself. It
is good to have help to do some of the taping.
Here is an image of the inside roof.
I tried not to cut the boards I folded them to leave a 10" overhang or
under hang.
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/nsMS5_tOQz-Rf5lZnHd5qw?feat=directlink
It creates a cool almost framed look.

Tonight I cut it apart and tape it back together to make the full
scale Hexayurt Stretch 6' model with 6' walls.
I am keeping the roof as those pieces are unusable since they have
been cut already.

I guess this thread is all me and that is fine.
It is mostly to help others that may be building a new hexayurt and
want to avoid the fire issues that have been discussed.
Going with Cardboard specifically honeycomb cardboard seems to be the
place to start.
I already built a thermax insulation hexayurt and getting the right
materials was impossible.
I ended up getting some type of Rmax which I was told is not the right
stuff.

So here is what I just found.
1" thick 48" X 96" for about $11 per sheet in Cali near LA
http://bestpackingsupply.com/CatalogProduct.aspx?ProductId=7
So my next question is has anyone used reinforced paper tape to hold
together a hexayurt.
Seems like it would be as good as bifilament tape for the corners and
sides you can tape ahead of time. Oh and for that amazingly popular
edging. NO MORE SILVER TAPE, although that got easier and easier the
more you work with it, pull white backer, stick silver tape, pull,
stick, pull.

P.S. Cheap I mean really cheap duct tape doesn't work well with
cardboard

Has anyone built and environment proofed a cardboard Hexayurt and if
so how did you do it?
I would settle for a good way to waterproof and create some fire
resistance.

I want to build a better tent alternative. Easy to Set up. Great in
many environments. Low cost to build and easy to store.

Regular cardboard stacked and bound, say six sheets thick, would be
strong and light.

How important is the integrity of the 4x8 piece? A single 4x8 would
be stronger than two 4x4's joined, wouldn't it?

Not sure if this should go here or the Burning Man Hexayurt Materials
thread...but here goes...

I just did a ton of research on hexacomb cardboard and its
availability in so cal. Very long story short, the sales guys at
Pregis (the makers of hexacomb) are just about the most helpful and
friendly people you'll ever meet. I talked to 3 different people, the
last one being the head of the division who offered to help burners
acquire this stuff in any way possible. They have distributors all
over the world that can sell smaller quantities (thereby avoiding the
need to buy a couple pallets)...including one here in my home town of
Santa Barbara, CA. This is the contact info (posted with his
permission):
Bill Wetzbarter
wwetz...@pregis.com
336-508-9823

Tharco is one such distributor, and they have locations in Santa Fe
Springs, CA (562) 944-6121 and San Lorenzo, CA (510) 276-8600. They
quoted me $12.70 per 48x96 sheet...not bad!

Hope this is helpful. Anyone else out there looking to build a
hexacomb hexayurt (how poetic) at BM this year? I'd love to connect
with you.

Because I could not find Thermax I did some work with hexacomb last year and love the stuff. I published the photos and details, which might be useful, here:

Darn fingers! The correct contact info for Bill at Pregis is:

Bill Wetzbarger
wwetz...@pregis.com

Sorry for any confusion there!

I am considering tape now - I have not purchased my honeycomb card
board yet. Still trying to figure out transport as I am in Oaktown
and the places that have been found are in SoCal.

Has anyone used paper tape to help edge the sides on their cardboard
hexayurt. Taping for moop is one of the longest processes and if the
paper tape provides a strong durable bonded surface it is one of the
cheaper ways to go.

I hope to get started soon as I have waited longer than I should have
too start.

I will keep in mind Pregis and their contact information and see if
they have a local distributor.

you know Reading is Fundamental.
I did not read past the contact information at Pregis and it is clear
that you gave me a local location

San Lorenzo Ca i right down the street from Oakland.

I will be calling tomorrow for a quote.

Update on the hexacomb cardboard issue:

I just spoke with Bill at Pregis again today, and apparently 48x96x1
hexacomb is not being stocked in California or Oregon...the closest
west coast place is Tharco in Algona (sp?) Washington.

Bill is calling me tomorrow (7/21/09) with a freight rate on a pallet
shipped to central California (where I live). There are 48 sheets to
a pallet, and my group requires 35 of them. If anyone wants to get in
on this, or increase the order and lower the cost for all, please do
contact me asap and I will do my best to organize this so that we can
all benefit.

Best,
Anne
