Is there any way to hide the menu bar icon in the latest version I got
from the app store? I like to keep that space nice and tidy and I
never really use the icon.

I assume there's some way to get at the preferences without using this
menu. It would be a waste to keep that icon up there just to get at
the prefs I open on rare occasion.

Thanks!

I would be interested in hiding the menubar icon too. Thanks.

I'd like to see that option too. I just bought 1.3 on the app store
but I'm going back to 1.2 until this is an option. That's *my* menubar
up there - and I like it empty ;-)

Thanks!

Definitely needs to be an option. You can get to the prefs by opening
the app.

A big +1 for this. I hate a cluttered menu bar and the best part of
Growl was how it fell back in to the OS. I'd rather roll back to the
pref pane version or look at another app than keep the unnecessary
icon (even though I already purchased 1.3).

+1
It would be nice to have an option to hide the menu bar icon and of
course no dock icon like in
textExpander.

I second this question. I'm baffled as to why you would remove this
function. I'm happy to help support you guys and you do great work,
but removing such a standard, important feature is puzzling to say the
least. As someone with a multitude of menu bar tools I use
consistently, I should have the option to shut off one I may use twice
a year or less.

Thank you for your time.

They are claiming it has some to do with app store guidelines which is
BS. I've removed 1.3 and posted a negative review on the app store.
Can't believe they thought this was OK.

It does have something to do with the app store rules. We're trying to get around it, but obviously not in 1.3.

Thanks for feeding back, Chris - and for continuing the work on Growl.
A few bumps along the way with this major launch are, I guess,
expected.
There's a lot to like about the new Growl too!

Just purchased this today and noticed the menu bar icon. First thing I
did was try to find a way to hide it.

Honestly, I can't believe that Apple would force software authors to
force menu bar icons onto it's users. Really? Forcing users to see a
menu bar icon is not Apple-like at all, and I've never heard of any
other software that has an icon up there without the option to hide
it. Even all of the stock Apple menu bar icons can be hidden.

I'd also like the ability to remove the icon.  Thanks!

Thanks for listening to the feedback, glad to hear you're working on
it.

If the issue is now one would evoke preferences without the menu, I
have a suggestion. Launching the application the first time (i.e. at
login) just opens the app without any windows. Launching the
application while it's already open could display the preference
window. This makes sense cognitively and should be easy for people to
understand.

I think TextExpander does something like this when it's hidden from
the dock and menubar. I never see the window at login but launching it
subsequently shows the pref window.

I really love Growl, I look forward to loving this new version as much
as always.

It's because of AppStore rule? I've bought Moom from AppStore too and that app offer an option to hide menu bar icon.

Another voice of discontent here. Ideally, I'd rather just open the
app when I need to see history etc. or even better, a Quicksilver
interface!!!

I'll wait for 1.3x or 1.x...

I really want to buy growl 1.3 to help support development, but after
hearing about the menubar icon change, I'm holding off for a fix/
update.

I'm also really baffled by this, I just bought bettersnaptool from the
app store and it allows you to hide both the menubar and dock icons,
and will still auto-start on boot/login.

Hold off until 1.3.1 then. :)
