So I bought Growl 1.3 from the Mac App Store just now, it downloaded
and installed. As I walked through the welcome screen, it suggested me
to remove the old growl from my system. I did with the recommended
uninstaller script. What it did, was to remove the new installation of
growl 1.3 completely and I can't install growl from the mac app store
without having to buy it again. It doesn't show up in my Purchased
list.

Probably related:

https://twitter.com/davedelong/status/120948223769714688

The Mac App Store sees the GrowlHelperApp inside Growl.prefPane 1.2.2 (or older) as a previous installation of Growl, and “helpfully” “upgrades” it by installing Growl.app inside the prefpane.

The result is that deleting the 1.2.x prefpane also deletes the 1.3 app that the MAS put inside.

(This wasn't caught in beta testing because betas are distributed directly, not through the MAS. As far as I know, there's no way to distribute betas through the MAS.)

First, make sure Growl isn't running. It shouldn't be, but this is nonetheless the first thing to check. Check this in Activity Monitor and kill it if it is.

Next, try quitting and relaunching the App Store app.

If that doesn't work, try holding down option when you click on the Purchased icon. That shows *all* purchases, regardless of whatever exclusion criteria it normally uses.

Peter is right, basically we could not have known about this situation.

We can either redo the uninstaller, or just tell people to go to the app store and redownload. The uninstaller is obviously the better route, since that's what's breaking this, but then again Growl is now in the wrong place so we'd have to move it in the uninstaller.

Certainly doable. Try to move Growl.app out of the prefpane(s) first, then delete the prefpane(s). The uninstaller does its thing with root powers anyway, so this shouldn't be too difficult.

Looks live I've bumped into this problem as well. Installed 1.3,
uninstalled 1.2.2 using uninstaller on the site and took 1.3 with it!
Now Growl doesn't appeared in my Purchases in MAP...

Also, Growl was not called Growl but GrowlHelperApp in Launchpad. I
think this could be related to that "smartness" of the Mac App
Store :D
Also, holding the alt key didn't help in the mac app store :(

I too just installed 1.3 from the App Store and followed the previous
version deinstallation instructions, and have no Growl now and nothing
in the App Store to show I ever bought it. I tried option-Installed
but there's nothing there.

Any suggestions? I can reinstall 1.2.2 for now, but I'd rather not
have to pay twice to install 1.3.

(Sorry, I tried to post this once already but hit Reply to Author by
mistake...)

I have a slightly different issue in that all this happened to me
Growl *is* in my Purchased list, I was offered the option to re-
install after I ran the uninstaller script which I did but Growl is
now nowhere to be found. The Store now only says "Installed" and won't
let me re-install. I ran the uninstaller script again but it made no
difference...

having the exact same problem...
tried holding the option key while in MAS, but it isn't working.
is there anything that can be done except buying the app again?

thanks

Fortunately, the MAS lets me download it again from the buy page. I
clicked on buy app and it said I already bought it so I don't have to
pay for it.
Thanks anyway for the help and good luck with fixing the bug ;)

Thanks, I didn't think to try that (as the app wasn't showing in the Installed list) and it's now reinstalled without charging. Useful to know, and i guess that's an App Store bug (unless the App Store's relying on some file that the deinstaller deleted to compile its list - which is kind of clunky if true).

It's weird all the way around, and not something we could have tested for as far as we know.

Essentially the app store is asking for the location of the app that uses the Growl preferences file's domain. It finds it, and that's GrowlHelperApp in 1.2.2. Once you install 1.3, it overwrites or merges, we're not sure yet.

So you run 1.3 and it says to remove 1.2.2, so our uninstaller is run and removes it. So then you are left without 1.3 nor 1.2.2, but you are left with other remnants.

The only solution is to reinstall Growl 1.3 from the app store.

Chris,

Any ideas what to do in my situation where neither 1.2.2 or 1.3 are
installed but the App Store is showing Installed? Is there a
preference somewhere that tells the App Store it's installed?

I bought the app tried to install it but no cigar. Tried again and App
store will not allow me to re-install. Am stuck with 1.22. What is
going on? This really should have been tested first before charging
us. I love the app but feel really let down

What do you mean by that?

There is no way to test Mac App Store distribution without distributing through the Mac App Store. They did as much testing as they possibly could.

I bought the app while running 1.22. Tried to install but pref pane
said 1.22. Tried to re-install with same result. I then could not gain
access for another installation following de-installing 1.22. Have not
re-installed 1.22 and can not go any further.

Thanks

Uninstalled 1.22 then went to App Store to re-install 1.3 and can not
gain access to installation no matter what I do.

Alright, let's do this.

1) Go to Launchpad

2) Click and hold the mouse on the Growl icon. When the Growl icon wiggles, click the X button to remove Growl.

3) Run the Growl uninstaller from the downloads page on the Growl website.

4) At this point Growl should be off of your machine. Go to the app store and download Growl again. You may be prompted for what looks like a purchase, but then the app store will inform you that you have already purchased Growl, and ask if you would like to download Growl again. Choose yes.

That should take care of it. Sorry for the trouble.

Followed these instructions exactly and still can't re-download app
from MAS.

What is it saying? I had someone who emailed support@ who had a similar problem, and she said she contacted Apple and they put Growl back into her queue. I don't know much about that though.

It simply says installed where there is normally a price. When I click
on it, nothing happens.

One thing to try is option-clicking the Purchases icon. That definitely used to work, but didn't for me.

Another to try is to simply search your machine for Growl. Any Growl.app, GrowlHelperApp.app, or Growl.prefPane, move it to the Trash, and empty the Trash (deleting them all for real) when you're done. Even if they're not in the normal places which would be truly installed, MAS will consider it installed if it finds it *anywhere*.

Settings files don't matter. You can keep those.

If you found any leftover Growls, then, after you've deleted them all, go back to MAS—maybe quit and relaunch it just to be sure—and look in Purchases again.

A quick update, nothing has worked so far. Sent an email to Apple
Support and got a somewhat canned response. I replied with a screen
shot of the App showing installed. Any other thoughts are appreciated.

can you see it in launchpad anywhere?
if you can, try click-and-hold in it til it shakes, then (x) to remove it.
then try going to app store and installing again

It's been deleted from Launchpad as well. Just sent a 4th Reply back
to Apple Support. This is a lot of work for a $2.00 App. I'd even buy
it again if that would fix the problem but it won't let me.

My issue was almost the same as yours however I managed to track mine back to an errant Growl.prefpane buried a few folders down in my Utilities folder. Deleted that and the store suddenly let me get it again.

3 days later and 6 or 7 emails to Apple and still no resolution.
Unfortunately, I was handed off after every single reply to Apple to a
different rep. Very frustrating. I reloaded 1.2 and I'll wait for 1.4
I guess? This was more trouble than it was worth. I'm totally
disappointed with Apple's support here.

Just to make sure I have the issue right still. You go to the app store, and it says Growl 1.3 is already installed and doesn't let you install it?

If that is the case, then 1.4 will not solve this. What is going on is that OS X has detect that, somewhere, you have Growl.

Search your file system for Growl, Growl.prefpane, and GrowlHelperApp. You can also search for GrowlMenu.

I deleted every file that contained the word Growl and I was able to
repurchase 1.3. Now my issue is that there are no applications showing
up in the Applications window. You have to be kidding me?
