Though I'm as disturbed as everybody else to read this March-08
felicitation advertisement by the Women's Commission of Kerala,
there is no surprise at all, in so far as we want to keep no illusions
about the "progressiveness" of this body ,or the LDF govt.
I would further argue that these expressions stupidly glorifying the
sense of security, tranquility, ,apoliticality and hence the ultimate
desirability of these roles for women as wife, mother etc. perfectly
match with the dominant practice of dubbing morally repugnant all the
non- conforming ways of thinking on women's lives and on their
subjectivities.
Perhaps this is one of those rare destinations where the leftists,
rightists and all those apologists of tradition and culture meet!
Unfortunately for people who would like to ask questions in terms of
liberation rather than real politicking, many a Keralite ,erudite man/
woman continues to have a fascination for this role of women in real
lives, though in their creative writings or imaginations we might
come across umpteen characters equally lovable even when not fitting
to the above model.
