Hello

Came across a study conducted by KSSP in Kerala on CFLs. They have done
lab and field studies with hundreds of CFLs, as reported in the
Malayalam monthly, Sastragathy, January 2009 issue.

The key finding is that when many CFLs are in the system, the pf and
harmonics are not all that bad. The bad effect seem to cancel out. See
table below.

CFLs pf THD
40 0.54 119.2
120 0.65 98.09
400 0.80 57.83

The study also says that contribution to harmonics and poor power factor
is higher due to TV, Fridge, Fan regulator etc.

1. Have any one come across similar studies?
2. What could be the theoretical basis for this?

Regards

Dear Sreekumar,,

That is true, when we have provided CFLs in railwayplatforms and colonies first time in konkan Railway we could find our average PF has gone up to .99 and the maximum demand has reduced along with reduction in cable joint failures. Othe benefits were good ambiance and reduced energy bill.
