When I try to install a new or update an existing script, the dialog
with a few seconds time out appears, the time out passes and the
Install button becomes active. However, when clicking Install, nothing
happens. After some googling I found the GM_scripts folder and it is
full of scripts, up to 25 copies of some scripts. I guess a new script
is added to this folder everytime I click Install (I can imagine I
have done it 25 times for certain scripts) but it is never actually
added or actived in Greasemonkey.

Already installed scripts work fine (although they can't be updated
with the same problem as described above).

Firefox's error console is empty. The system wide console (this is on
Mac OS X) just displays

2010-07-06 11.32.49 [0x0-0x1f5ff5e].org.mozilla.firefox shouldload:
http://userscripts.org/scripts/source/XXX.user.js
2010-07-06 11.32.49 [0x0-0x1f5ff5e].org.mozilla.firefox ignorescript:
false
2010-07-06 11.32.50 [0x0-0x1f5ff5e].org.mozilla.firefox ignoring next
script...

Any ideas what the problem might be?

Does the same thing happen in a fresh profile?

Probably not. But I don't want to lose my profile since it is heavily
customized.

The answer to the question is still important. It's a diagnostic tool
to try, not a path that I'm advising you to permanently turn down. If
it (fresh clean profile) does work, then we know it's something in your
regular profile causing the problem. We can then dig there to find it.

I have done some experimenting. Restarting Firefox didn't solve the
problem. However, restarting the *computer* solved it - temporarily (a
week or so).
