Mapper Program to Download Maps for gpsVP

This website has a navigation software for GPS also, http://terracrosser.com/.
But there is also a file called Mapper. Its a program which you run on
your PC and choose a map area and zoom level and it converts the map
to .map format, which the GPS program uses as a map.
Is there a way gpsVP can also use the .map format as a map? I can find
a good website that has maps I want.

Hi,
Fine software, thanks for mentioning it. But I've just tried it and I
don't think it will be possible to use it to download maps for gpsVP.
Following reasons:
- The packed map format is a not documented.
- "Mapper" downloads the images to a subdirectory before packing them
and don't delete them. But thoses images are not the original tiles
from google maps (tiles are always 256x256). Terracrosser uses a
500x500 format. "Mapper" apparently includes a browser (Internet
Explorer as activeX component), move the map and makes snapshots of
the screen automatically. The resulting images doesn't correspond
anymore to the original tiles so it won't be easy to use them with
gpsVP.
But do you know that gpsVP can download maps? You can use the Windows
XP version of gpsVP to download some maps on your PC and then copy the
cache directory to your mobile unit. If you need an explaination on
how to download maps with gpsVP, just look at the thread called "Auto
Map Download Enhancement". But I agree that it is much more user
friendly with Terracrosser.
I'have just found another software to download maps: Googleak (http://
www.linuxtechs.net/kruch/tb/forum/viewtopic.php?t=833&highlight=google+tiles).
This software does keep the original tiles. I think it could be quite
easy to reuse thoses tiles with the next version of gpsVP (which will
allow to configure maps). Googleak already can export maps for
TrekBuddy or for OziExplorer. It might be possible to ask the author,
if he would like to add an export button for gpsVP.

Okay, I looked into the topic ""Auto Map Download Enhancement". So I
am running gpsVP on my Vista. I set up a cache folder and I transfered
all the downloaded maps onto my phone. Then I opened up gpsVP on my
phone then selected that cache folder which I transfered. But for some
reason, it keeps showing the default Garmin map. How do I get that
default Garmin map to go away and show me the Google map which I
downloaded.

gpsVP can display garmin maps and a raster map at the same time. But
if you want, you can deactivate the garmin maps in the map list (menu
map/garmin maps).
To display the raster map, check the following things:
- select the same map as the one you have downloaded
- move the map to go at the place for which you have downloaded map
tiles
- zoom to the zoom level for which you have downloaded map tiles
