I have installed gOS to my external HD and like it very much. What I
don't understand is why my window buttons (close, minimize and
unmaximize) are on the left of the window border rather than the
right. Can I change this? In the preferences->appearance theme the
picture does show them on the right. Any ideas, anybody?

Because gOS theme is a modified 'human theme' to emulate a Mac OS, you
can't change this. You can try to search new themes by these ways:

1. From Synaptic Package Manager and search 'themes' (ex. ubuntustudio-
theme) directly.
2. In the same Synaptic, install gnome-art, and this application lets
to download and install themes, walls, icons, splashes, etc. from
http://art.gnome.org/
3. Or... download and install Emerald Window Manager and then install
themes for Emerald, but need to change the configuration of XCompMgr,
read this discussion: http://groups.google.com/group/goslinux/browse_thread/thread/c97504a0e9f458de

Hope to help you.

gOS's theme differs from normal GTK Themes and is considered by many
more elegant and also user friendly becaause of how the windows
display and where the close/min/max buttons are. It take adjusting to
get used to but can be more convenient for many users.

Personally I use big huge buttons on my right hand side.

Go checkout gnome-look.org for some other themes if you want different
ones.

Easy answer found here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=181034

Copied and pasted here, in case the thread gets lost:

To change the Window decorations i.e the placement of the minimize,
maximize and the close button on a window in gnome please do the
following:
Step1: Alt+ F2 (this will bring a run dialog window)
Step2: Enter: gconf-editor (and hit the RUN button)
Step 3: You will now get a Configuration Editor Window . Please follow
the following directory path: apps>metacity>general>button_layout (in
the options window) and change the layout/sequence as you please.
