The Acela Express and Amtrak rail systems would benefit the users of
Google Transit Trip Planner.

They serve the Eastern Seaboard, and connect to other trains that
carry passengers throughout the country.

Yes, adding Amtrak is a good idea. Does anyone have information on
this? Hopefully Amtrak has already provided the information and Google
is in the process of integrating it into their system? I hear they
have a bit of a backlog there.

A year ago we investigated adding a special Sacramento-SF commute
service that runs on Amtrak. At that time it was said that corporate
Amtrak was uninterested in Google. WMATA recently abandoned their
Google effort, so it appears Google Transit isn't for everyone.
Perhaps they just need encouragement.

Stay tuned folks, Amtrak is in the process of launching its routes in
Google Transit. The project is underway

Hi MM14:

Could you please provide some more information? I am working with
counties in Northeastern California who would like to see their
regional Amtrak schedules added at the same time as local transit
routes are added. It would be very helpful to know what is underway
with Amtrak and Google Transit.

Thanks,
Aaron

Our group, the Coast Starlight Communities Network
(www.coaststarlight.net), is currently working with Google to add the
Coast Starlight route to Google Transit until Amtrak gets all their
routes up. Our files are almost ready and we should be submitting
them back to Google within the next two weeks.

If anyone has any information about Amtrak adding their routes, please
let me know also (either via the group or at
webm...@coaststarlight.net) - we've been unsuccessful in getting an
answer from Amtrak on this one.

Capital Corridor is in the process of adding their route (trains only
- no ThruWay buses for now) to Google Transit. They are scheduled to
go live by the end of the month.

In general, Google discourages partner agencies from pre-announcing
Google Transit launches, as there's a variety of things that can cause
launches to be delayed.

As someone who once spent a Sunday afternoon fine-tuning the location
of every Amtrak station icon on Google Maps, though, I'm certainly
looking forward to the day when Google Maps can give directions over
any Amtrak route!

Joe,

Gotcha!  and that makes sense.

I did notice an improvement in the Amtrak listings on Google Maps!  I did notice that the Hayward Amtrak station (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Hayward+Amtrak+Station,+Hayward,+Alameda,+California+94541&sll=37.663648,-122.135881&sspn=0.008731,0.019312&g=1650+Via+Tovita,+San+Lorenzo,+CA+94580&ie=UTF8&cd=1&geocode=FSrAPgIdhu-4-A&ll=37.666858,-122.097786&spn=0.002183,0.004828&t=h&z=18&iwloc=addr) listing is a little off. It is showing up down the street at a house! Would you be able to adjust that? I've tried reporting it but nothing has changed and because it's a business listing, the "Edit" option doesn't show up.

Thanks!

When the Amtrak schedules are added, the thruway bus schedules should
also definitely be added. They connect a lot of smaller towns that
are not served by transit, and they are a very important part of
Amtrak's network here in CA for instance.

What I've gathered is that, in Capitol Corridor's case, they are not
adding the connecting thruway bus schedules because Amtrak itineraries
legally need to include some sort of rail segment. They don't want
users getting the wrong idea when bus-only segments are returned.

This would be something that could likely be solved with a proposed
change over at gtfs-changes (http://groups.google.com/group/gtfs-
changes/) if or when Amtrak becomes interested in publishing their
information to Google Transit.

Justin,

The problem I see with lisiing the thrubus service is that these
routes are ONLY for Amtrak guests. So if they listed their service
and I was going from an address is Gainesville Florida to an address
in Starke, Florida it would tell me to use the Amtrak bus and since I
was not traveling by train I would not be allowed to travel.

A better thing for rural or small urban areas is if Greyhound added
their listing or if Antrak sold tickets between mid-points on its
service.

It appears that Amtrak Stations are now popping up in Google Maps
(check New Brunswick, NJ, for example). I notice that in the case of
New Brunswick, there are now TWO stop locations - the NJ Transit stop
point from their GTFS feed, and Amtrak's stop location. In reality,
these are stops at the same station, but are shown as different stops
(FWIW, the Amtrak location is well off. I suspect their lat/long
database used to generate the points isn't as precise as possible).
This is the result of different groups developing the GTFS data.

So...

the question is; is it possible to merge stops across data providers?
can we come up with a "standard" for referencing existing stops?

Hi,

It is great that more Amtrak stations are showing up now!

Is there any way we could delete duplicate entries added by people other than Amtrak or Google?  Maybe Google could add an option in Google Maps that says "Delete Duplicate Entry".  Then people could flag duplicates and Google would review before changes take effect.

Also, how can we flag Amtrak stations that are in the wrong location?  I have tried contacting Google and TeleAtlas before, but I haven't seen changes made.  For example, the Hayward, CA Amtrak official station marker is off by two blocks...

Thank you!

I don't know if this is relevant to any of you, but I'm trying to get
the MBTA to put their routes and maps on Google Transit. There is a
group on Facebook to gain awareness and to show interest in numbers.
Here is the link: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=54414191579

I've already called the MBTA and plan to follow-up, but if you have
any interest in this or if you simply just support all transit
authorities adding their routes onto Google Transit (I would imagine,
you all would), then join the group.

Thanks
Luke
