Hello!

I'd like to mentor certain development for OpenBSD (namely, MVRP and
BFD support)

1) I do not represent OpenBSD organization itself (but we are using it
widely)
2) OpenBSD is not registered as an organization for GSoC as far as I
know
3) OpenBSD is shipped under BSD licence (I came to conclusion it is ok
for GSoC)

questions are

1) who can add project to GSoC ? can it be just me or it must be
OpenBSD organization ?
2) who can menter MVRP and BFD support development for OpenBSD ? can
it be me ? I can provide student with any equipment (installed on our
side) and mentoring support

thank you!

The application period for mentoring orgs has not even opened yet. I
suggest you contact the OpenBSD project direct to see if they plan to
apply.

You can certainly apply to be a mentoring organization for GSoC, but
remember - the students choose the projects from a list of Ideas
posted by accepted mentoring orgs. If you and/or your company? want
something specific developed for an open source project, you should
approach the project directly rather than applying to GSoC.

Hope this helps.

so, the only way is to apply via OpenBSD organization?

No, it is not the only way to apply. You are of course free to apply
as an independent mentoring org if you want.

If you want something added to OpenBSD, why not go directly to the project?

If you want something added to OpenBSD, why not go directly to the project?

you can go directly of you want, there's no problem.
and let me choose my own way, ok ?

Please review the information at

And at http://en.flossmanuals.net/GSoCMentoring/notes-for-first-year-organizations/

Good luck with your application.

Hello Илья,

> why do you beleive I should approach it directly ?

When there's an established community, it's usually in everyone's best
interest to improve it rather than fragment it... Successful open
source requires collaboration. If you're not interested in that
(especially when there's an established community like OpenBSD), then
I would think there is greatly decreased potential.

You're certainly able to do your own thing, just don't expect others
to cooperate with you after you've demonstrated unwillingness to
cooperate. If there is an open source community that you want to help
improve and you're not working with that community, that's just
unfortunate.

For what it's worth, I found your latest reply somewhat rude or at
least uncouth. I certainly don't speak for her nor think she needs
defending, but as her signature notes, Cat works for the Google Open
Source Programs Office. She's patiently answered every one of your
questions. She's awesome. I don't think it's smart to be uncouth to
the people you're asking to fund your interests... :)

Regardless, best of luck whether you choose to work with OpenBSD or
not. Love that operating system.

Cheers!
Sean

I do not remember me asking which way to choose. If I really need that answer, I'll ask it, sure.
