Hello,

I am interested in GSoC 2010.I have read all the links/blogs etc.But I
still have a doubt.Going by the 2009 schedule of GSoC,selected
projects would be announced on March 18. And assuming that a student
is selected then he/she will start coding from May 23 onwards. So
effectively he/she gets almost 2 months for interaction, reading
documentation, going through code and all that stuff. Now my question is
that this much time is enough??..I mean i asked a professional working
in a very grade MNC.He said that he was given almost 4-5 months for
all this stuff. Here we will be having many projects in our mind (as we
don't know in which project we would be selected) and less time as
well. So, this much is time enough??.I seriously don't know. That's why
asking.

Typically, you don't need to know all the documentation. You can learn
as you code. One thing is sure, a GSoC requires 4 ~ 7 hours of work
per day on average. But coding is such an awesome experience
(especially after you realise the source of a bug and fix it!), that
you won't feel the hours pass :)

You need not wait for the deadlines.Starting with couple of projects
with the organization you are interested in and interacting in the irc
channels would be helpful.

Let me tell you an insider's secret ;-)

Most open source projects are looking for long-term contributors - not
people who just do a GSoC and run away. They like people who are
already contributing and are promising long-term contributors.

So if you really have a passion to code and are interested in learning
and contributing to FOSS, I suggest you start learning right away and
start contributing now. That way, you'll get all the time you want :-)
and at the same time, you will increase your throughput during your
GSoC as a side-benefit. Of course, it would be best if you would
continue to contribute after GSoC as well :)

Akarsh

Thanks for your replies...

@ Akarsh Sir

That was predictable..Why will they select a guy who just code for 2-3 months and run away when they have lot of people who are willing to contribute after GSoC as well.....Anyways thanks for confirming this point.. ^_^

Hi,

Could you tell us who to approach and when to approach to participate in GSOC?
