Ok, I think all those people who are clamoring for Java, haven't read
the restrictions on this thing.
Threads aren't supported. Java is multithreaded.
CGI interface only. Sure, you can run Java as a CGI. But that's
crazy.
No networking, no file creation. Java, your best features are out.
For this to happen, Google would have to license the Java stack from
Sun, same as Azul systems do. To modify it to run on the App engine.
Sure, it's possible, and I could be wrong, but I think google has
better things to do then re-write java. Because that's what it would
take to cripple it like that. Think about it. You would even have to
cut out the garbage collection!
I think those languages that already support most of what the App
engine does (ie. it's restrictions) will be considered.
Those are (aside from python):
1) PHP
2) Ruby
3) Perl
I don't see anything else being possible within the next 5 years.
Then again, I could be wrong. Please prove me wrong.
