With the v2 Custom Search Element, you can control some of that stuff through CSS and some of it via your CSE's control panel. I don't know that you'll be able to have complete control, though. Nor do I know if things can be set to transparent.

The Google Search Element is not related to the Places API you're reading about. That said, you should be able to build a control that will indeed autocomplete an address. You would simply restrict the autocomplete request using the types parameter, as outlined in the documentation.
