Please join us on Tuesday 1 September 2009 from 09:00am to 11:30am for the launch of a major new policy report from the Royal Society.

Speakers:

·         Introduction by Lord Rees, President, The Royal Society

·         Professor John Shepherd FRS, Chair of the Royal Society's 'Geoengineering' working group

·         Professor John Beddington FRS, Government Chief Scientific Adviser

·         Dr James Lovelock FRS, Green College, Oxford

·         Professor Ken Caldeira, Carnegie Institution, Stanford University

·         Professor Catherine Redgwell, University College London

·         Dr Doug Parr, Chief Scientist and Director of Policy, Greenpeace UK

As greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, and the terms of a global deal in Copenhagen hang in the balance, radical solutions to climate change are receiving increasing attention.  Proposals under discussion include geoengineering:  deliberate large-scale intervention in the Earth's climate system.

Over the past year, a Royal Society expert group has been looking in-depth at the feasibility, risks and uncertainties of geoengineering approaches, within the broader context of responses to climate change.

The report makes recommendations to ensure that any geoengineering activities are managed responsibly at national and international levels, and do not detract from wider efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
