Some of you may have picked this up on CR, but for those who haven't my 1941-2 Joe Cooke Imperial Petrel is now finished.
Well, after over a year of gathering the necessaries I finally got the Petrel on the road last Sunday. There are still some bugs to be ironed out and some adjustments to make - the cotterpins need to be filed a little more as I have popped the same one twice now; brakes need some adjusting as the caliper arms are binding; etc.
I went with a more sombre war-time look - all black. It was impossible to get a clear idea of what would have been appropriate, so I have come up with what I think a wartime bike may have looked like. At some point I will paint the lowest part of the rear mudguard white in keeping with pre-War regulations.
The paintwork is absolutely stunning - I can't take credit for the choice as that belongs to Neil Foddering from whom I purchased the frameset. The black with blue headtube is a Joe Cooke trademark scheme - the pinstriping and luglining was a superb touch by the painter. It is painted in stove enamel and is a beauty to behold. The headbadge is a rarer version - with red lettering instead of the more usual blue. The Imperial Petrel on top of the downtube is also a nice touch.
I have done my best to find pre- and early-War parts. This was a challenge, especially when it came to brakes. I settled on a Bowden Touriste brakeset. The Cyclo Ace is from a 1938 CB and is fun to use - surprised me - but will need some fine tuning. The frame was built with a bracket for a tension arm, but apparently not for the Ace arm - I may have to trade for an Osgear at some point.
I have a CL lamp-bracket but the fitting on the frame needs to be retapped. I am on the hunt for a wartime lamp. I have a black Miller bell to attach and a handlebar mount water-bottle cage on the way. The Terry's pump clamps and Bluemels Noweight pump add a nice touch as do the Bluemels celluloid grips. The bars are Middleton bend with celluloid covering. I will be changing out the toeclips and straps at some point.
