Hello,

Two problems installing Gears on Firefox 3.5.2:

1. FireFox doesn't seem to want to launch the main downloaded file,
GoogleInstaller_en.application, as an application, instead it just
gives the prompt to save the file. This is contrary to the
documentation on the gears installation page

2. When I launch the installer 'manually', I get the message "Cannot
download the application. The application is missing required files.
Contact application vendor for assistance"

I've installed previous versions of Gears just fine, and I'm also able
to install this by downloading GearsSetup.exe, but I'm developing an
app that's highly dependent on Gears and I want as smooth an install
process as possible for my users, who will not be able to follow a
complex installation procedure.

Is anyone else having these problems?

Thanks,
- Andrew

Andrew I had the same problems when I downloaded Firefox 3.5 from the Mozilla site. However, I got sick of trying and decided to return to a version of Firefox that was working with Gears (I have a Mac so went to the latest Mac version  that did work with Gears). I installed it over the top of 3.5 and Gears automatically began working as normal. Some time later I decided to try installing 3.5 by using the update feature and this time it updated Gears and other add-ons and has worked fine since then.

Hope this helps, all the best
Pete

Thanks for the reply. Is anyone else having this problem or is it an
isolated incident? I tried the installation on my Vista machine as
well and got exactly the same error. This is frustrating.

I have the exact same problem as well, has anyone else figured out how
to solve this besides what Peter did? I'd rather not have to uninstall
FF if I don't have to.

I suspect this may have something to do with the .NET click once helper add-on (from what I can tell it deals with the .application files).  For my Firefox 3.5.2 install I had to manually get the .NET helper and install it, the "Find Updates" feature of Firefox didn't seem to know about the 1.1 version of the .NET helper and the 1.0 version is incompatible with 3.5.2.

The ClickOnce helper is exactly it - it seems like the FireFox 3.5
update doesn't brign the ClickOnce helper along with it. Here's the
link to the helper addon - once I installed this, the automated Gears
installation proceeded as advertised:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/9449

Thanks for the help.

hi,

i had the same problem. after a few seconds, the gears installer page
that makes the .application file popup reveals a dedicated .exe
download of the setup. a line appears saying "Don't see an installer?
Click here." and the "here" contains a direct download link. i
installed gears from that and it seems to have installed well. gears
is now detected in my browser.
