The installer runs, I see no errors, but it does not appear in the add-
ons list and I can find no way to open the console.

Restarting has no effect. Running as administrator has no effect.
Installing a second and third time behaves exactly like the first

1.05 used to work fine under FF2.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Use about:config to set extensions.logging.enabled true. Open Firefox-
>Tools->ErrorConsole. Clear it. Install. post what you see.

Sorry, I just did exactly what you requested, but no errors showed
up. I tried with and without administrator privileges. In both
cases, upon restarting FireFox, the only errors that appeared in the
error console are CSS errors from parsing this Google Groups page.

Derek did you reinstall after setting the logging? You should see a
lot of messages, other wise you didn't succeed at setting the logging
value. John.

Actually I missed setting the logging config to true the first time,
but let me tell you what happened since my last post:

1. I wondered about extension conflicts, so I created a new profile
and tried to install with no extensions. It didn't work, but I had
one extension (McAfee SiteAdvisor) that installed itself
automatically. I disabled it and installed FireBug. It worked! This
_did not_ require Vista Administrator permissions.

2. Thinking I had solved the problem and wanting my bookmarks, other
extensions, and other settings back, I deleted the new profile (oops!
read on!), disabled SiteAdvisor, and reinstalled FireBug. No dice!
So I disabled all my extensions in the original profile, and tried to
reinstall FireBug. Still no dice!

3. I decided to try a new profile again and see what I could do about
importing my original settings after installing FireBug. I repeated
the procedure from section 1, above, _and it didn't work_! I tried
with the error console open. Still nothing. I tried restarting with
the error console. Still nothing. Somewhere between the 8th and 12th
reinstall/restart FF cycle, as I tried minor variations in my
procedure, it worked again.

4. This time I didn't delete the profile with FireBug, but I went
back to my original profile, disabled all the extensions, then
repeatedly attempted to reinstall FireBug. Again, it worked after a
dozen or so attempts. I reenabled the other extensions and everything
still works! I went back and deleted the FireBug-only profile.

Anyhow, I'm up and running now, but I'm willing to try and get a log
of a failed install for your benefit (and maybe mine, next upgrade).
I created a new profile, set the extensions.logging.enabled key to
true as you suggested, then ran the install, and the error console
remained blank. I tried it twice and also checked the console after a
FF restart. I had the "Show All" filter selected each time.

I'll keep trying to get a log or whatever if you have any more
suggestions. FireBug is the only extension I have had any sort of
problems with (out of about 6), so I think this must be some sort of
FF interaction specific to FireBug.

Thanks again,

Derek

I also experienced this problem. I could not install Firebug 1.2 on
Vista. I disabled all the plugins and it installed.

The following plugins were disabled:

Adobe Acrobat
iTunes Application Detector
Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U5
Microsoft Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin
Mozilla Default Plugin
Quicktime Plug-in 7.4.5
RealPlayer Version Plugin (huh.. gotta get rid of this crap =)
RealPlayer(tm) G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-In (32-bit)
Shockwave Plugin
Silverlight Plug-In

Not sure which one it's conflicting with, but disabling them all then
restarting, then installing firebug, restarting and re-enabling them
worked for me.
