hey all,

I'm trying to get the Educoder ball rolling again.  I've been doing some work in Drupal for other projects and I think it will be the perfect platform for this community.  I expect that it will supplant this mailing list since it allows you to subscribe to just the topics, projects and authors you're interested in, which will be important as our membership diversifies.

You can take a look at the working draft at http://educoder.com/ .   Once that's ready, I'll serve it up at http://educoder.org/ , replacing the Wordpress there now.  There's not much up yet, except a blurb and a feed aggregator, http://educoder.com/aggregator.

I want people's input in setting it up so I'm making a survey to disperse far and wide.  Here's a draft and I'd appreciate any input you have on it:
<<<
Please describe your work:

How do you get support from others in this work?

What positive experiences have you had with community support?

What negative experiences have you had with community support?

What would your ideal community support system be?

If you received an e-mail with a post on a topic interesting to you, how likely would you be to reply if you could do so in your e-mail client?  What about clicking to a web page?

What are keywords of topics that are important to you?

Are you a part of any online communities for your work now?  If so, which?

Are there any blogs you read for your work?  If so, which do you read the most?

Do you blog?  If so, at what URLs?

What types of records would you like a community site to keep track of?

Which of these record types would you use? (read, comment, add)
- learning environments
- frameworks
- data analysis tools
- defunct projects
- research papers

Do you have any time to contribute to the development of a community site?  If so, how?  (e.g. moderating, making a logo, developing the visual theme, etc.)

Can your answers to this survey be shared online?  (yes with my name, yes only anonymously, no)
What is your name  (not shared unless allowed)?
E-mail address (not shared unless allowed)?
>>>

What do you think?  After some feedback I'll put it into a Google Form to send out and pass around.

Just a couple years later, here are the results of the Educoder survey. Many people are at the Toronto meeting now and I thought we might want to revisit these questions.

To refresh, here is the survey:

There were 12 responses, two requested to be anonymized and one didn't want results shared. I've attached a Google Forms summary and a full CSV with the requested info omitted.

The gist is that the respondents wanted more online community among Ed Tech developers. Most were already Educoders but there were also new grad students, professors and a CTO who responded.

Oops, here's the correct link to the survey form:

(the other link is to the survey results spreadsheet which I can't share because some people requested that their data not be shared)

There's no cutoff. Not everyone responded. I don't know if anyone is using the results.

Thanks a lot for putting this together Turadg,

I find it very interesting that nobody reads tech blogs on a regular basis. I'm gonna have to change my vote to a "regular blog follower" ever since I got teh internetz on my phone :)

There certainly seems to be a great need for an online community of educoders. Hopefully the blog at educoder.com has bridged the gap a little bit. This reminds me, once we get a breather up here in Toronto, we should update the Projects pages to reflect the frameworks/libraries we're developing now -- or maybe when they're at a more stable point. But regardless, it would get great to at least write an update post about what we're up to here at the Toronto lab. Matt? Rokham?

Cheers,
Ali
