Hey all

Can anyone recommend good lockable storage solutions for members'
files and equipment? We've previously had a custom locker system built
and we've also used Ikea's stuff, but we're looking for other ideas...
any vendors or specific products you could recommend would be great.

Thanks muchly

Eli,

We've got a great building materials reuse store here in Seattle and they have a lot of lockers pulled from old schools.  They must have something like that in Toronto.

Look to local schools, gyms, community centers, vocational training centers, etc, and see if they're getting rid of any lockers. They tend to be in great shape (how much damage can you really do to a locker), cheap, and are appropriately lockable (ahem, they're called lockers).

Twice we've successfully found a batch of matching lockers on Craigslist...once 10 units, this last time 24 units. Members love them, and standard combo locks work perfectly.

We have lockers but every desk also comes with a private cabinet with
a lock and key. They're pretty standard from office depot.

We use mobile pedestals with cushioned seats. No one has ever asked for lockers here, and they prefer lockable file cabinets with pencil drawers. We have these drawer sets on wheels to reconfigure the space as needed, and the cushions act as additional seating for events.

Jerome,

These sound pretty awesome, were they a custom build or a product you can link us to?

Steelcase.

I warn everyone: if your budget is typically Craigslist/Ikea/similar, these aren't for you.

We (http://www.coworkingcologne.de) upcycled old lockers.
Maybe this is a source of inspiration for you.

I imagine this is one of the areas in which we are not really like a
coworking space. But FWIW, I put their stuff in a box (those plastic
storage boxes) and put it away when they leave and put it out for them
when they come.

Are the members asking for locking storage? I thought this would be an
issue at the beginning so I bought 4 locking file cabinets. No one
locks them and none of the members have asked for additional secure
storage but this might just be our space....+ it's always staffed when
open so maybe that makes a difference.

Hey Eli,
'For member's equipment, why not use regular lockers (ie, school
lockers). There is a used office furniture store in Scarborough
(Toronto) that will paint them to any color you want. Let me know if
you would like their details.

I second Neil's suggestion. School lockers are very practical and scaleable. They can also be woven into your economic/environmental sustainability story as an very visible example of material reuse.

Let's revisit this in 2018/19 ---  As we build out (we have limited open space by the desks -- are resident members preferring a cabinet at their desk or are they ok with a wall of a few small lockers?  We wish to be prudent and not waste money or space on items that people do not use.

Thanks!

This is a tricky one. ALL of my experience with lockers is that they are a place where stuff gets put, and then left, and then forgotten about forever.

We removed our lockable storage options (school lockers specifically) because that only exacerbated the issue - we'd do annual cleanouts only to learn that 80% of the lockers hadn't been touched in 10 months 😂

What we've settled on now are:

1 - Full time members with dedicated desks are welcome to bring in a desk-side filing cabinet if they want. That's theirs, with their belongings in it, and it goes home with them if/when they downgrade or leave

2 - For flex members who want to leave things in between visits, we have a limited number of clear plastic bins they can put things in. Clear discourages people from putting valuables in them, and makes sure we can easily see when bins are empty or idle. The rack is ~$40, and bins with/lids are $10/each.
