Hello All!

You might have heard about pop-up restaurants and clothing stores in
big cities like NYC or LA.. These temporary establishments generate
buzz via social media, open for a night or two in a surprise location,
and then disappear for a while just to do it all over again.

I'd love to know if anyone has had experience combining this concept
with coworking. Here's an example I found here in Colorado: a popup
store that supports the creative economy in colorado by carrying local
products and offers coworking and networking: http://yespleasemore.com/

In anticipation of a new article, I"d love to learn more about how are
people expressing their creativity in creating temporary coworking
contexts. And, what are the elements that make them successful?

If you have photos or an anecdote about pop-up style coworking spaces,
please contact me on list or at GoneCo...@gmail.com.

Thanks!
Beth

Hi Beth

We think the pop up store concept is very exciting and relevant.  In fact, the many pop up store examples in NY and LA  were the inspiration for the pop up coworking fun that we (LiquidSpace) had at SXSW (South by Southwest) in March this year.  We partnered with our friends at Steelcase/Turnstone (who know a ton about how to design great spaces) and also with Liz at Link Coworking, to create a network of pop up and permanent spaces around Austin Texas (Liz at Link Coworking joined us for the fun) for people at SXSW to actually get work done amidst the chaos and frenzy of that crazy event.    To make it fun and thought provoking for everyone, we sprinkled pop up workspaces in a handful of novel places including an art gallery, a hotel, a bar and even a bus (I know that more than a few folks on this list logged an hour or more on the Turnstone Bus...the portable AC unit worked hard that week).     People at the show that week, used LiquidSpace to locate, book and check in to the venues.

We've got a ton of photos from the event... happy to fwd if you'd like.    We certainly are NOT in the space business, but we can definitely see a world, hopefully soon, where pop up spaces become a common occurence in the growing ecosystem of awesome, authentic new/alternative spaces where work really happens.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Beth,

I think that pop-up coworking is a great idea. I was inspired by this
example at Milan Salone Design Festival earlier this year:
http://coworkingmilano.com/2011/04/17/cowocamp2011-was-here/

It inspired me to do something similar at London Design Festival this
year, and I am presently pulling together plans for a pop-up coworking
space for the duration of the festival from 17-25 September. The space
will hopefully offer desk spaces, casual meeting areas, free wifi and
coffee. it should enable people who attend the festival to have a
shared office location which could make it easier to meet, network and
do business during the week.

If anyone who reads this is going to be in town let me know!

Hi Mark,

It was great to hear about your SXSW pop-up coworking.

I am planning something similar for London Design Festival in
September. There will be about 350,000 visitors for a week long series
of exhibitions and events from 17-25 September.

Can you send me a link to your photos please? It would be really
helpful to get some ideas and inspiration!

Kind regards

Hello All,

I'm in the process of putting together a coworking space and have been
playing with the idea of doing a
coworking pop up for 40 days as a way to prototype coworking in the
community.

For those of you who have done it, what are some of the ways you
financed the pop up?
Did you charge? Find Sponsors? I'm curious to know. I would
personally like to make it free.

Thank You.

It's taken me a few days, but I just wanted to thank everyone who
replied to this thread...you've given me so many great examples to
work with. For those who have photos of the spaces in question and are
willing to share them: please forward the images to
goneco...@gmail.com, and be sure to include the desired
attribution.

Many thanks!

At a Coworking Q&A at SXSW '09, somebody mentioned that they had an opportunity to open a coworking space in a location that was going to be demolished inside of 12 months.

Geoff's response (he was on the panel) was: DO IT.

Building coworking in a temporary space has a lot of implications, but the best of them means that you're never focusing on the space, and ALWAYS focusing on the people!

It does mean that you need to do some other things differently, but the vast majority of the changes you'd have to make in order to achieve success would all relate to how people interact with each other which, if nothing else, is valuable practice for when a permanent space comes around.

As a solution to our overflowing space, we're going to be trying
something new and it's not AT Cohere. We're going to be experimenting
with coworking when we have no set physical space. You might think
this sounds like a Jelly and maybe it is a little bit but the
locations, members and times will always be a surprise. Read more on
what we're up to on the Cohere blog today

hi salim,

we're a coworking community in north county san diego. we've been
jellying since feb and made it out to the sxsw coworking conference
and met some of these inspiring people! it's my first time posting so
hello all!

we jelly 2x/mo in a different space each time. some spaces are
inherently free (library, coffee shop) but most are hosted in atypical
"work" spaces (rock climbing gym, brewery, wine bar) in exchange for
marketing (tweet, post, newsletter mention). it's been great to reach
out and get such positive responses to coworking. our goal is to
secure spots at no cost or by trade. this summer, we've partnered up
with a kid's gym to get a discounted rate for our coworking parents.
we were inspired by colleagues on tap's pop-up offices and until we
get a permanent space, we figured why not use our nomadic existence to
our advantage!

my advice is to reach out to your community and tell them what you're
doing and why you're doing it. go for it. you never know until you
ask!

Kim,

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond.
Its dope to see other people in the process of starting a space.
Weve been doing pop up spots every Wednesday, and its been a great way
to test market and share concept around coworking.

What I actually had in mind when I asked the question, was regarding a permanent 40 day coworking pop up at a location. Community is community and I aim to follow the coworking creed of building community. I am just curious if there are people out there who have done the pop up at a location and found a way to finance it, while paying rent and keeping things operational etc.

Looking forward.
