It just occurred to me that asking this group for specific help might be way better than trying to find someone to help with a problem / project / issue than trying to find some random expertise in the yellow pages, on line, etc.

For example, You all referred the insurance company I now have over two years ago....the relationship has been perfect. My local insurance folks would not touch coworking.

But taking it one step further..

1. Maybe this has been thought of before and I missed it, but, is there a "Coworking Project Opportunity" board somewhere? For example, I would much rather get help from a fellow coworker, pay that coworker, and thus support other coworking locations when / if I need, for example, iPhone or Android app development expertise.  Yes, this may be a possibility in the near future depending on how things go...

2. But I have a REAL need now:  I know some of you are non-profit.  If you have done that in California and are willing to give me pointers / advice (not for AltamontCowork, but, for ForCarol.com) on how to proceed (ie do I need to do the 501c federal too?)....that would be greatly appreciated.  I have some $$ if it takes more time...

Anyway....we as a coworking community are growing rapidly...it seems to me we will soon (if not already) have the expertise to tap within our own community.

Thought?

i like this idea of collaboration, after all its what we are all about.  Maybe a website, a social network of sorts for co-working and collaboration. Allow fellow co-workers and entrepreneurs to find like minded people with the skills they seek.
I am opening my first co working facility in columbus soon and I would love to be able to offer my people the connection to a dedicated social network

This is a great expression of why I think we should consider something more versatile than the Google Group.

I know this was shot down once before, but having "sub-forums" will allow for more focused discussions to emerge without people needing to wonder or worry about who's listening - or not interested - in their idea/inquiry/post.

I really don't think a "social network" is the solution to this, since they become TOO fragmented. But some light construct for things like job/business opportunities, industry-specific questions, coworking newbs, coworking vets, marketing questions, space questions, etc...could each have their own sub-forum. This would also allow the "general forum" to be more of a casual meeting place for all of us rather than a place with several dozen new threads every week, many repeating.

I'd be willing to go back to Zoho again since they were interested in providing the service free to us as a "community" or Open Source Software style project. The only cost would be in moving the existing coworking google groups' contents into it.

Unless someone gives me a specific reason NOT to, I'm going to pursue it again and report back.

I agree. Optimistically, I think there's perhaps a missed opportunity here. Maybe even a business model concept for one or more startup businesses. It breaks into 2 categories:

1.  There's us as the coworking community helping one another---and that is grand, admirable and
     unique in the universe.

2.  And . . . then there's the fact that, who? stables more self-directed, professional freelance
talent across the globe, than we do? So who better to prosper one another than (us) sending
     virtual, fair-priced business to one-another, across cyber-space?

A posting board of some sort where you could cherry-pick from freelancers (or) job-projects (for) freelancers, who are solely the best of who coworking-shops have to offer. This could mean shopping, prospecting fellow 'coworkers' first. It would also mean enriching the community because of the community.

@Mike: I have an email out to some lawyers in California. I hope to
hear from them before the weekend but can't promise that fast a
response; in any event I will forward you any names I may get. I am
afraid I don't know if they cowork or not but at the very least we
ought to be able to get your nonprofit questions answered. California
law is notoriously not the same as anywhere else so I dare not express
any opinions about that myself, but I will tell you that the one to
answer the 501(c)(3) questions is often an accountant. A lawyer will
tell you how to do it; an accountant is often the one to ask whether
or not you should. Either way, I will get back with you by next week.

And for the rest, I'm in. And incidentally, since we are here already
I really think we ought to use Google Wave.

What?

Okay, seriously. I really am in. I think that for our current simple
purposes the LinkedIn Group could be set up to accomodate what we are
talking about. It is possible to set up private sub-groups inside a
public group, I understand. However, along with several of you I
think that our future uses might be more ambitious and I am a great
believer in planning twice and moving once.

I am not holding a brief for any platform, I will leave that for the
competent people. Around here they are all crazy for Yammer, but I
have not used it at all.

@Mike: Possibly I should have mentioned, er, I am a lawyer. Or was,
my licence is in inactive status since I moved to another continent.

But I still have connections in low places, like say amoung lawyers.

1. Maybe this has been thought of before and I missed it, but, is
there a
"Coworking Project Opportunity" board somewhere?

I recently set up an online community for Cohere at http://thesuperfluid.com
and someone from the company contacted me and wants to know how
superfluid can support the broader coworking community. Check it
out...you basically trade for services using virtual currency. It
might be something but a bit more experimentation with using it is
probably in order. Has anyone used it?

The guys from SuperFluid are here in Philly - I've talked with Nathan about his system and his vision. It's interesting and exciting, but it's a little bit "off" from how I've seen actual work get done at Indy Hall.

The virtual "currency" is essentially a points system for favors, which I'm decidedly against. I don't like the idea of doing favors purely for the sake of receiving favors.

I believe that the elements of trust are what allow for real quality work to be exchanged, and thick value to be built, not the desire for points or favors to be returned.

ALSO: virtual currencies are taxable when they're applied to commercial services. Superfluid knows this and that's why they have 2 separate systems, one p2p and one business.

Yeah. +1 for real money. Alternative currencies always end in disaster. The US Dollar is virtual enough as it is. :)

Every time I hear an online barter network between coworking folks I cringe.

I don't think we would need to suffer the disruption of trying to move a large group like this.  It seems to me we could achieve many of the results people are looking for by building on top of the existing Google Group.  I also just got put in touch with the Groups Project Manager over at Google and there is an opportunity to work with them to make it a better tool for us.

There are plenty of opensource perl, and even ruby scripts that'll
archive entire google groups to import into other platforms or even
just in a sql/csv file.... just do a search on google code or github
(or ask me if u can't find it).

I really could have sworn i made a post response last week regarding
me being absent since the NYE post, thought it was in one that started
with jacob talking about some tool he saw a group using in europe and
my only response was well why don't we just re-create the community
easily with wordpressmu or buddypress. it'd have a file system,
forums, blogging (personal and aggregated), etc.. plus even a job
board perhaps.. Anyhow i even mentioned that i have a site thats
really old which has most of those features and can put it online for
u guys to see what at least it'd 'feel' like. Just don't rag on me for
the content.. it was an online phish community.
(i feel like i'm taking crazy pills because i honestly looked/
searched for about 20 min and still haven't been able to find that
stupid post). sorry

Since i discovered http://www.quora.com a couple of weeks ago ( i must
say that i am still not in the using-mode) and read this article
today http://www.observer.com/2011/tech/new-yorks-stack-overflow-14-times-bigger-quora
i am wondering how this will affect the coworking community or the
other way around how the coworking community could use this new tools
to even better use the "Coworking Community Expertise". What are your
thoughts?

Tools like Stack Overflow and Quora only work when you're asking the right question, and even then, at varying degrees of effectiveness.

Communities like this one help make sure you're asking the right question - and then answer!
