AT UNIFORUM '96: EIGER AND EVERYTHING AFTER

UniForum '96 is coming up next week in San Francisco, and if you can make it,
you should. SCO is expected to announce pricing and availability for "Eiger,"
the long-awaited version 2.1 of UnixWare.

UnixWare 2.1 is extremely important, and not just to current UnixWare users.
It's not just a significant update to UnixWare -- it's a big early step toward
"Gemini" (the merger of SCO OpenServer and SCO UnixWare) and "White Box" UNIX
(the 64-bit UNIX System implementation to be developed by HP and its partners
and licensed by SCO).

To get all the details:
+ come to the SCO-HP announcement at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday,
February 14 at UniForum '96 (Room 120, North Hall, Moscone Center, to be more
specific);
+ if you're a reporter or analyst (or a UTG member), come to the "Network with
the Newsmakers" briefing at the Open Systems Pavilion (exhibit space #1726) at
UniForum '96 (where you just might hear about some new AIM Technology "Hot Iron"
award winners, hint, hint);
+ if you're a current or potential developer, get an invitation to the Developer
Conference SCO and HP will host at UniForum '96 on Thursday, Feb. 15 (and
contact UTG or SCO today for more details); or
+ keep you eyes glued to the World Wide Web sites of SCO (http://www.sco.com),
HP (http://www.hp.com), the UniForum '96 show
(http://www.comdex.com:8000/Online/ecsuf/general/uf.html) and UniForum
Association (http://ww.uniforum.org) and UTG (http://www.utg.org) during the
week of the UniForum '96 show.

BEYOND UNIFORUM '96 I: SCO AND THE INTERNET

Yesterday, SCO announced its "business-critical Internet" strategy, under which
SCO plans to deliver "the full commercial benefits of the Internet to business
customers." The strategy will center on server-based solutions known
collectively as "Atlas."

Key strategic elements include bringing collaborative computing to enterprises
via "intranets" and "virtual private networks" that use Internet technologies,
delivering sufficient security to support electronic commerce, helping
businesses publish and share information securely and economically, and
supporting easy connection to the Internet for LANs based on Novell's NetWare.

SCO will make the Internet "an integral part of all SCO products, services,
training, and partnerships," and deliver to ISVs and other partners whatever
they need to build and sell the next generation of Internet applications and
products. Low cost, ease! of use and broad distribution will also be important
components of SCO's Internet strategy.

SCO's Atlas strategy includes partnerships with Netscape (for its Internet
software products), Morning Star Technologies (for security technologies), Micro
Computer Systems, or MCS (for Windows client and NetWare connectivity) and
Netcom (for Internet access). SCO's strategy has also been endorsed by several
server and system vendors, including Intel, Digital Equipment Corporation, IBM,
Acer America and UTG members Compaq and Unisys.

You'll be hearing a lot more about SCO and the Internet from SCO, its partners
and UTG in the next few weeks and months. Meanwhile, come to UniForum '96 or
browse the Web sites of SCO, its partners and UTG for more info.

===============
BEYOND UNIFORUM '96 II: SPEC 1170 COMPLIANCE

Details are few at the moment, but UTG members are eagerly anticipating code
from SCO that will make UnixWare 2.x compliant with Spec 1170/UNIX 95, standards
promulgated by X/Open Company Ltd. UTG members will begin to receive more
information on this exciting development between UniForum '96 and the UTG Member
and Board of Directors Meetings being held in March in Japan.

If all goes well, UTG member companies will be able to begin delivering
standards-compliant products based on SCO's UNIX System technologies within nine
to 12 months. Stay tuned!

AN APOLOGY, AN EXPLANATION AND A COMMITMENT

First, an apology. In UOW #10, there were several incorrect uses of the UNIX
trade mark, for which your UOW Editor takes full responsibility. Also, some of
the writing might have confused some readers into thinking that SCO had taken
the reins of the entire UNIX System business, and not just the UNIX System
licensing and UnixWare businesses SCO purchased from Novell. Again, apologies
from your editor.

Now, an explanation. Usually, X/Open's guide to the use of its trade marks is
right next to me when I create UOW. This was not the case with UOW #10, but will
be the case for all future issues. Meanwhile, if you'd like a copy of the guide,
contact Graham !Bird, X/Open's Director of Branding, at g.b...@xopen.co.uk, and
I'm sure he'll be glad to send you a copy, so all of your references to UNIX,
Spec 1170, UNIX 95 and the like are consistent with the desires of the owners of
the marks.

Finally, a commitment. UTG and its member companies are committed to supporting
and complying with the leading standards in the open systems industry,
particularly those promulgated by X/Open. While bodies like X/Open promulgate
and oversee standards, specifications, interfaces and the trade marks that
accompany them, UTG members are committed to consistent, interoperable and
compliant implementations of those standards.

In the next few weeks and months, you'll see UTG deliver more details about this
commitment. UTG also plans to intensify its work with members and other
companies, to broaden acceptance of SCO's UNIX System implementation and to
increase its interoperability with other environments important to business
computing.
