So, what exactly does "no cost, no kidding" mean? Can I use Sun Java
Availability Suite after I download it for free or do I need a chargable
license?

(beep) Help, I've fallen and can't reach the beer.
Very good question IMO, I've been puzzled by that myself as well. In the end
the only thing which matters as far as I know is the licence you get from Sun
when you download the software.
Many (most?) resources I've seen tell me that the Java Enterprise System is
indeed available for free, which implies both personal and commercial usage.
However, when you download it you don't get a license send to you iirc, only
for the Solaris OS. But since the whole software package is now packaged under
the "Solaris enterprise system"...
Because of my service contract for Solaris 10/x86 I asked my reseller about
this. The first reaction was silence, the second was "we don't know" and the
last one was something in the lines of "All software which gets included with
the licensed Solaris release automaticly falls under the license and as such is
bound to be legal for full use".
Quite frankly I don't know anymore. But since every resource tells me that
things are "free" now and since Solaris itself is free of charge for both
personal and commercial use I think its safe to say that you can indeed use the
JES free for commercial usage. It makes sense IMO since its part of the
"Solaris Enterprise Suite" now and according to my reseller this 'suite' falls
under the same license (in my case support contract) as the Solaris OS itself.
IMO logical since some components (the Directory Server for example) were
already free for "personal use" and "internal commercial usage, to a limit of
500 connections". (connections / entries, not sure from mind). I picked this up
as "you can't put the Directory Server (excellent piece of software if I may
say so) on your server hooked to the Internet, but can utilize it on your
internal Intranet".
To make a long story a little longer: I'm already busy testing the Java
webserver (/SunONE) against Apache and if things work out as they should I'm
seriously considering the move. Also because if all goes as planned Java is
eventually going to become a bigger issue than PHP on my boxes.
Anyway... long story... To round up: I think its safe to say that the JES is
made available for free, implying free for both personal & commercial usage.

I'm at the same boat. I know they are free and the only additional
requirement I have is, software patch/update, can I get those. I don't need
human support and things like that.
Thanks.

Thanks.
I wish that someone with authority within Sun would fire the entire
marketing department and employ people whose first aim was to promote and
sell Sun products and services rather than change the name of products every
six months. How many name changes has the compiler suite had in the past
few years? Four or five that I can recall. Sun Cluster has almost nothing to
do with Java so why the name change? Why is it so difficult to get new
licensing information out to the web sites?
This stuff matters. If I promote Sun stuff internally and some management
bod comes back with a Sun web page that contradicts what I recommend we all
look stupid.
