Has anyone ever used / experimented with using an ATI Radeon 9200 MAC PCI
graphics card on a SB150 with Solaris? I really need more than 32MB of
video that sun offers and have heard some info that leads me to believe this
may work.

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

The Sun XVR-100 is in fact a ATI Radeon 7000 Mac edition.
There is a 32MB (375-3126) and a 64MB (375-3181) edition.
There was a PROM for DVI Console Support for the 32MB model somewhere (if
you google for it).
But I don't think the Radeon 9200 would work. Even if it would work at the
OBP level (due to forth code) there would be no OS support for it.

I always wanted DVI console support for the XVR-100, and it seems like
such a PROM update actually exists, see:

http://chs2.gdc4s.com/sw_supt.htm

If it's doable, why don't we get a supported PROM patch from Sun
for both the 32MB and 64MB card ?

I realized long ago that when it comes to SUN video they are behind the
times and unwilling to catch up. The fact they are still using PCI
cards for video is quite a concern.

Using something else requires motherboards in the workstations that
support something else.

For Sun's Opteron Workstation line this is easy - the current models
have AGP slots, so they come with nVidia AGP cards. For the SPARC
line a change to something other than PCI will have to wait for new
SPARC workstation models with something other than PCI on the
motherboards. Your sales rep may be able to get you NDA info on
future Sun workstation plans, but I can't comment publically on
unannounced details.
