an CTAN announcements
I am offline, pending an improvement of conditions. This includes
tug.ctan.org, www.ctan.org, and az.ctan.org on the interfaces http, ftp,
and rsync.

In case I do not come back, I would like to thank the people that I have
enjoyed working with over the years. I would also like to thank the TeX
Users Group, including the board and particularly including Karl, for
their sponsorship. And, I would be remiss if I didn't again acknowledge
the support provided by Saint Michael's College to me, and to the entire
TeX community, in bearing the Internet traffic.

This sounds quite disastrous to me. Is there anyone who can (or is
willing to) explain the background and how the users community could
help to get this all-important service back online?

www.tex.ac.uk is functioning fine, so you can get at the archive there.
I'm sure more detail will appear soon.

Ditto. I sure hope Jim is OK and wish him well. Do let us know if/how we
can help.

At any rate, if another hosting solution is not an option (I wonder what
bandwidth ctan.org requires, it probably is quite high and this is not
even considering the work to keep it maintained), perhaps the DNS settings
or (domain URL forwarding feature) for the ctan.org domain could be
changed to point to the tex.ac.uk (or other) server.

In this way, urls such as:

http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/hyperref/

would automatically map/alias to:

http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/hyperref/

This would not be a cure all, but it would help a lot of people.

Cheers,

Mike Shell

Sounds pretty frightening indeed.
Anyway, infinite thanks, Jim, for the job you did, and for the job let's
hope you'll be doing again soon.

Best,
Paul

we're looking for another hosting solution (we have an offer), but
haven't made any decision.

has).

will try to get something posted tomorrow.

To add to what others have said, I'm sure the entire TeX community
appreciates the hard work you've done over many years.

I look forward to welcoming you back...and in the meantime I want to
express my own thanks for all the hard work you have put into this over
the years.

All of which made me check my own CTAN search and fix the bugs. This is
not as comprehensive as ctan.org but it works as a package and file finder:
