Subject: [*] HyperDecisionTree 1.2

This is HyperDecisionTree 1.2. It fixes some minor bugs
>From version 1.1 with editing conclusions.

HyperDecisionTree 1.2 is designed to be a pseudo expert
system
shell. This stack enables the expert to set up a
"tri-nomial decision tree" and work through
questions on the way to a conclusion about a
particular problem which end users may have.
Primarily this stack serves as an overview of the
decision tree. Each question the expert askes
corresponds to each branch of the tree or each card
in the solution stack. The stack that the expert
has created, the solution stack, downloaded to a
separate stack. The solution stack is then given to
people trying to solve a particular problem. The
expert keeps this stack, which is a shell, for
solving other problems.

TrashMan 3.0, the last word in trash maintainence for system 7!

TrashMan periodically scans your trash, and deletes files that have been there
longer than a time you specify, in days and hours. TrashMan uses almost zero
cpu time, but there is a 'Run once at startup' mode for those who cant't afford
the cycles.
TrashMan works with AppleShare volumes, and is ideal for use on servers.

New Features:
--No longer manipulates the dates on files.
--Operates via AppleEvents, to allow drag-drop and programmable operation.

Subject: Adjusting Finder memory (system 6)?

On Wed, 09 Oct 91 09:21:19 EST, Murph Sewall <SEW...@uconnvm.uconn.edu>
explained a method to increase the finder memory partition (System 6) in
response to a query about running out of finder memory:

Solution: make a copy of Finder. Open the Info (File Menu) window.
Change the application memory (the same way you do for any other
application). Replace the Finder in the System folder with the copy
which now has a larger memory (you won't be able to trash the old copy
until you restart, but you can put it on the desktop). Restart.

Actually, you don't need to work on a copy of the finder. All you have to
do is change the application size in the get-info box of the active finder
and restart. Doing this does not in any way endanger the system or the
finder while both are operational--so there is no need to work on a copy.

Subject: Answer: PS --> EPS

About 2 weeks ago, I posted a question about how to do a PostScript to EPS
conversion. I got plenty of responses asking me to pass along any info, but no
help. Finally I posted my question to the Internet PostScript newsgroup, and
found out that EPS was just PS with the imaged picture in a large comment (hence
the name "Encapsulated"). This requires a complete PostScript Engine, so my
respondent thought it would be impossible. However, I know that SmartArt by
Emerald City Software uses the postscript engine in the LaserWriter to do its
imaging work. So those of you shareware or commercial software gurus ever
slavering for a buck -- here's your chance! Create a utility that takes PS
output from the LaserWriter driver sends it to the LaserWriter for imaging and
then uses the original PS and the image to create an EPS file! Maybe it's not
that easy, but from the number of replies I received, I'd say it stands a fair
chance of being a money maker.

Subject: Apparent Bug in Radius TPD Upgrade

A small but *incredibly* irritating bug in Radius TPD ROM v4.4
-------------------------------------------------------------

I am posting this in case you are a Word/Radius TPD user, and
haven't yet installed the Radius v4.4 ROM upgrade. You may want
to save yourself the hassle.

Radius shipped its System 7.0 ROM upgrade for the Classic/SE/Plus
Two-page Display (TPD). Unfortunately, the new ROM has a bug that
affects Microsoft Word. I find the effect so irritating that I
have removed the ROM upgrade, replaced the old v3.3 ROMs, and re
installed the old Radius software. Microsoft believes that the
bug is due to Radius, and at this point I agree.

Here's why.

Word has a selection bar -- an area of white space -- at the left
of the document window. Clicking in this white space selects a
line, or paragraph, or the whole document, depending on the
modifier key pressed.

Under the v3.3 Radius ROMs, moving the cursor into and across the
Word document window would give this behavior ( "<" is a left
pointing arrow cursor, ">" a right arrow cursor, "I" is the I-beam
cursor):

|-|--------------------
<| aaaaaaaaa cursor is outside of document
|

|-|--------------------
|> aaaaaaaaa cursor moved into selection bar
|

|-|--------------------
| Iaaaaaaaa cursor moved to start of line
|

Under the v4.4 Radius ROMs, moving the cursor into and across the
Word document window does this instead:

|-|--------------------
<| aaaaaaaaa cursor is outside of document
|

|-|--------------------
| >aaaaaaaa cursor jumps right, across selection bar
| to start of text

|-|--------------------
| aa>aaaaaa arrow cursor moves into text
|

|-|--------------------
| Iaaaaaaaa cursor jumps left to start of line and
| turns into I-beam

For those with eagle eyes, I have taken some liberty with the
number of "a"s in this example, to show the location of the
cursor. The Radius v 4.4 ROM does not affect text in the window,
just the movement of the cursor.

The "jumpy" cursor makes it difficult to position the I-beam, and
select text using the selection bar. It is also one of those
small-but-annoying things that I can't get used to. I tried. You
may love the new behavior, however. If you do, don't bother to
flame me about my preference.

This bug persisted after removing all inits & cdevs under system
6.0.5. It did not occur with the TPD disabled, using the SE's 9"
screen. The bug did not occur in Excel 2.2, and I haven't seen
this effect in other software. The bug disappeared after
replacing the TPD upgrade ROMs & software with the old v3.3 ROMs
and software. Therefore I'd call it a bug, although Radius may
yet call me back and claim this is a feature. I would disagree.

The v4.4 ROM has other odd behavior that doesn't present a
problem. Most obvious is that startup screens display on the SE's
9" screen, even if the SE is disabled! The v3.3 ROM will display
startup screens on the TPD.

I am still waiting for the System 7.0 upgrade for my Radius 25,
and may retry the TPD upgrade with the Radius 25 upgrade. I did
not try the TPD upgrade with System 7.0, because the old Radius 25
accelerator ROMS are not 7.0-compatible, and will not run System
7.0.

If anyone has any ideas, or has received a patch for the v4.4 ROMs
to fix the bug, I would like to hear about it.

Subject: asynchronous Laserwriter Driver

Hello|

I'm trying to connect a XEROX 4030 II laserprinter to a mac.
The XEROX speaks postscript (the ImageScript/2 clone) but DOES NOT
speak appletalk. So what I need is some sort of Laserwriter driver
who sends his postscript output to one of mac's serial ports.

A while ago there was an "asynchronous LaserWriter driver" available
>From APDA, but they don't sell it anymore. Does anybody know a source
(PD, shareware or commercial) where I can obtain this driver (or an
equivalent one)?

I can imagine an alternate solution: One day I saw a postscript emulator
program called TScript running on a mac under multifinder. In the Chooser
it appeared as a laserwriter "TScript", so that I could use the ordinary
laserwriter driver to print and Tscript intercepted the postscript code in
order to drive a non-postscript-speaking laser printer (it worked, but *very*
slow). So what I would possibly need, is a piece of software, that fakes the
behavior of a laserwriter on appletalk (so that it can be seen in the Chooser)
and intercepts the output of an ordinary Laserwriter driver and redirects it
to the mac's modem port. Does anybody knows of such a program?

Any answers, hints or leads will be much appreciated.

Subject: Copying diskettes under Sys 7, avoiding shuffles

Has anyone yet found an answer to the system 7 peculiarity of requiring
large numbers of disk shuffles when copying a diskette on a single-drive
system? If I have to copy disk A to disk B, I could do it on system 6
with exactly 3 disk inserts (put in B, eject it, put it A, drag it over
B, then load B when requested). On system 7, when I insert B and eject
it, as often as not I'm asked to insert it again, then I can eject it.
After I load A, I end up having to insert each of A and B several more
times. This is irritating when I have a large number of disks to copy.

Subject: I need help choosing full-page display for IIsi

I recently purchased a "demo" IIsi from the local university dealer and am now
interested in getting a full-page display to go along with it. I need some
help/advice from persons who are familiar with the products/companies listed
below. Specifically, I want a full-page display that works with the built-in
video of the IIsi, can do 16 grays (it would be nice if I could change this for
more speed if necessary), and is of good quality. I know of these presently:

Apple portrait, $749 from MicroUSA
Radius Full-Page, $629 (free shipping) from Mac and More
Radius Pivot for Bulit-in Video, $638 from Bottom Line (the 1-900 company)
Sigma Page-View GS, $569 from MacLand
RealTech Full Page Display, $495 from Software and Hardware that Fits
(I think this one works with the built-in video....)

My questions are as follows:
1. These prices are from MacUser's November issue. Do you know of any better?
2. Is there a *recent* review article that compares these monitors?
3. From your experience, how does any one of the monitors do on the following:
brightness, contrast, distortion, glare, etc.?
4. Do they come with software that is any good?
5. Are the outlets listed above reputable?
6. How much should shipping be (fast is not that important)?
7. Are the monitors upgradable to 256 grays with a card?
8. Anything else I should know?

Please respond to me directly and will summarize for the net if there is enough
feedback. By the way, I would love a *color* full page display, but the color
pivot is out of my range -- even at Bottom Line's new $1239 price. Is there
hope of a cheaper model from someone else in the future?????

Thanks in advance,

It's certainly screwed up, but not irretrievably. There is a little known free
upgrade from version 2.0 to version 2.0a that fixed, for me, a number of
printing problems, as well as a really bad drawing bug (create an object with a
lot of lines, save the file, reopen it, and the lines, which were carefully
aligned, come back just a wee bit away from where you left them). Personally,
given the seriousness of the problems, 2.0a should just have been sent to all
registered owners, and not require a call to tech support to find out that it's
fixed in an announced release. They've lost me as a customer - I now use
Canvas.

If you've already upgraded to 2.0a and this is still a problem, I regret that

SuperPaint 2.0a fixes this problem. Also note that any pictures
you've done in the drawing layer in versions prior to 2.0a) and
pasted into something else (like a Word document) will not print
either. In this case, you'll have to cut the graphic out, paste into
2.0a (or another drawing program altogether) and then paste it back

in the Info-Mac archives. OK, but what is its use, given that I cannot
increase the memory partition of any other program?

Subject: Wanted - Library Access Software

There are several good DOS programs available for accessing university
libraries via Telnet. Typically they include a list of libraries and
information about how to log on to each catalog system. One such program is
a Toolbook application by Richard Duggan of the University of Delaware
called CATALIST.

Has anyone seen a similar application for Macintosh? Please reply directly
to me. I will summarize for the net.

WANTED: INFORMATION ON MENU CUSTOMIZATION UTILITY: MenuWriter

I am looking for a utility to customize the Finder menus.
Layout does not work. MenuWriter seems the kind of utility I am looking for.
Any information on MenuWriter or other utilities for menu customization would
be very welcome.

Please respond directly to me.

Subject: Why are my cicns doing the hokey-pokey?

Recently, I downloaded the wonderful color icons from the archive.
fpre...@caen.com did a great job (he's a cool and froody dude who really knows
where his towel is!). One problem was, when I downloaded his icons, many of
them appeared to be swapped (Word Perfect had a Donald Duck icon, etc). Since
then, most of them are all right, but occasionally, I find a few mixed-up ones.
Does anyone know why this happens? Does having 300+ color icons blow the doors
off the DeskTop?

Thanks anyone who can help,
