I used to be RISCOS user but no longer have any hardware. I have found
a box containing old magazine floppy discs from magazines such as
"Acorn Archimedes World". They are free to anyone who wants to pick
them up from me in the Peterborough UK area

Matthew

If you're interested, I have 5.25" Micro User and Acorn User floppies
as follows:

MICRO USER
December 1989 (2706) to November 1990 (2615) inclusive

ACORN USER
April 1991 (1315) to October 1991 inclusive

I also have partial and complete runs of Acorn User (1983 to the early
2000s!), Acorn Computing, Archimedes World, Risc User, Archive, and
some random others such as Archimedian and the Clan Acorn newsletters.
I have a huge amount of the cover floppies and CDs for these magazines
too. I may soon be passing them along to another RISC OS enthusiast
who lives locally (southwest Scotland), but if there is any interest,
I can ask that chap to get in touch with any of you.

It would be a shame to see this stuff going to waste (hence my recent
efforts to distrubute BBCs, Acorns/Archimedes, and peripherals among
any takers). It should go to people who will appreciate it, and
particularly to people who will find it useful. Such a treasure trove
certainly shouldn't be lost.

Thanks for your message.

The only BBC disc I want is that mentioned Acorn Computing one from
Volume 11 Number 11 (Special 1993) that is the only BBC disc I am
missing I have all the other ones on various DVDs, CD-ROMs, just this
one disc I want, and it's really annoying having them all except for
one.

You could advertise the stuff you have on www.stardot.org.uk forums in
the for sale section and see if there are any takers.

There is one item that could be of interest, and it will sound a bit
bizarre , but do you have the cover disc for Archimedes World -
November 1992? I have the disc and it's contents but it's not the
original one as it never worked and I think I sent it back and never
got a replacement or something, but the thing is when I've finished
scanning in the remaining Acorn User magazines I have , I would like
to scan in all the Archimedes World ones too, and the plan is to do a
scan of each cover disc to include it with the magazine pages, however
without that disc I can't do it, so are you able to provide a scan of
the disc or send me the disc , or can anyone else provide a scan of
this cover disc ? sounds silly I know but it's all part of preserving
my Acorn collection of stuff before it's too late and I haven't got it
anymore and can't find it anywhere (like the Acorn Computing disc)

Thanks
Matthew

Thanks for the offer of your discs and stuff.

cheers

What happens if you scan a floppy disc? Does it survive the experience,
or are scanners non-magnetic?

Well mine works using light. Any magnetic fields around will be small.

I think you're thinking of an MRI scanner.

Image scanners work using light.

Exactly as stated above. A scanner works more or less the same as
taking a digital photograph of the item, except in a more controlled
environment (not variable light or distance). But it's still based on
light being interpreted by a sensor.

Hmm. There were a bunch on 3.5" floppies for all of 1993, and I've
been informed that they are probably the same as were on the 5.25"
discs. If it's content you're after, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to
image the floppy and send it to you. I think they had handwritten
labels though (copies of copies, probably) and so I can't be sure
which is which. Any idea of what the content is?

See above - I've given them away. Also tons of BBCs, Acorns (a full
range from Electron to A7000+, but I kept the Electron...), software,
manuals, and the magazines - not interested in money, just in seeing
them have a good home where they'll be appreciated. I therefore don't
have the cover discs anymore, but I can put you in touch with the guy
who does.

That's probably in there too, there were lots of Archimedes World and
Acorn Computing discs. I'll mention it to the guy who now has them and
let you know.

It is the content i'm after, i'm not bothered about owning the
physical disc, I just want the contents of Acorn Computing BBC Micro
5.25" 8 bit subscription disc from Volume 11 Number 11 (Special Issue
1993) I have all the other cover discs and subscription discs, just
not this one, which is proving really hard to get hold of, and if the
Acorn User CD-ROM had of been done properly then this disc would have
been on there like it was supposed to.

I have checked all my cover discs in the loft, and I don't have
November 1992 proper disc, I have a home made copy one which I
remember someone sent me because me original disc didn't work, but I
don't have that so i'm guessing I sent it back and never got a
replacement, so I have the contents on this disc (and the Arc World
CD-ROM) but I just wanted to get a scan of the disc label to put with
the contents directory, thought it would look good to show what the
cover disc looked like.

If you can get let the person who has them now, know about all of this
that would be good.

Thanks
