But is it registered?

Erm! Won't Ctrl-Shift-F12 do anymore, or even Menu on the Switcher icon?

Trying to open the zip from today's TempDir directory on RISC OS 5.16
crashed TempDir, with the message from WimpLog:
20 Jul 18:47:32 000 80000002: Error from (unknown): Internal error:
abort on data transfer at &FC031A40
No idea what this means!
With best wishes,
Peter.

...Pants on fire... ;-)
It requires two mouse clicks.
Click one on the icon bar icon.
Brings forth the Taskmanager closedown window.
Click two on the Shutdown button to do the business.

Well, if you've not had the name officially allocated, you'd better!
Anyone releasing software should really use the allocations service: it saves
all this hassle and avoids problems for users with clashes of variable names,
sprites etc.
See http://www.riscosopen.org/content/allocate
You download a little application and make a request file using that, and
e-mail it off to allo...@riscosopen.org
They get back to you pretty quickly usually.
Looking down your other apps, you might want to know that someone's already
taken the name "Link" as well.

I think Kevin must have used sprites which can be rendered only on RISC OS
Select for the application's icon. On RISC OS 4.02 it also causes problems
opening the zip file, but doesn't completely crash the Filer as occurred on
my Iyonix.
When trying to open the !Sprites or !Sprites22 on 4.02 I get the error "Bad
Sprite data" from Paint.
I was trying to work out how such a simple application could be 68K when
zipped, but it's because it's based on DrWimp, which is 136K unzipped in
itself. The actual !RunImage is only 4K.
I don't suppose the application will meet with much favour for users of RISC
OS 5 or RISC OS 3.7 and earlier, because on those machines it will just shut
your computer down with a single click: there is no "shutdown window" asking
you whether you're sure.
By the way, Kevin, in your PROCclosedown you have a weird set of
instructions:
close$=CHR$(&1FC)
close%=&1FC
FOR char%=1 TO LEN(close$)
SYS"Wimp_ProcessKey",close%
NEXT
All that could just be replaced by
SYS"Wimp_ProcessKey",&1FC
Note that saying CHR$(&1FC) is pretty meaningless. Numbers greater than &FF
cannot be used with CHR$, at least not the way you're thinking. Anything
beyond two hex digits will be stripped off, so what you have written has the
same effect as
close$=CHR$(&FC)

Why the left-hand side of the iconbar? That's reserved for attached
hardware devices; system shutdown (if the Switcher isn't easy enough) should
be on the right-hand side (probably prioritised to sit to the left of the
Switcher).

Wouldn't it be better to just allocate a name and be done with it? That
way, if Shutdown /is/ taken, you won't have to change the name later when it
would be more confusing.
Allocation is free, quick and easy, and avoids all kinds of problems that
you might otherwise be inflicting on your users. It also avoids you
annoying other developers when you trample all over their legitimately
allocated resource names (no idea if Steve allocates his names, either, but
you get the idea).
There's no excuse these days for releasing an application without allocating
the resources it uses.
Seriously -- just get it sorted.

Sorry to report after downloading !Shutdown twice.
Shutdowns SparkFS archive causes RISC OS Filer to 'Crash' all windows to
disappear from Desktop on Iyonix RO 5.16 when trying to unpack it!

Sorry - contrary to my last post the filer is taken out - I misread
'all windows' to mean *all windows* rather than filer windows 8o(

... and when doing a reboot the machine powered off immediately,
rather than giving you a few seconds to reboot.
Does it do something funny in !Boot that is executed immediately
SparkFS gets as far as extracting the !Boot file?

It was designed to be used in a club where only one person knows about
RISC OS and what they were doing was turning off the computer by turning
it off.
They have no reason to use the left hand side of the computer, so it is
less likely that they will hit it by accident.

I did for some strange reason I had alpha transparency instead of
standard, new version uploaded with standard transparency sprites.

I would of thought that a shutdown warning would be a good idea. mind
you the application is not ment for experienced RISC OS users.

Steve - is there, or should there be, a database where we can check
existing allocations?
I think the allocation service (past and present) has been reluctant
to make public the allocation data because there could be some
commercially sensitive data there (ie details of stuff in
development). Much less likely now, of course.

Of course: it's maintained by ROOL. You think up your name, fill the
details into an allocation file using Allocate, and mail them off to the
correct address. In a few days you get a reply saying either "it's yours",
or "sorry, taken".
The actual data isn't publicly available, as that would breach
confidentiality. And it isn't just commercial companies who might want to
keep allocations private until they choose to announce the project in
question.
Perhaps ROOL should allow those "owning" application names, modules,
etc to opt in to an open list?
While I accept the need for confidentiality while software is in
development, it's a bit silly that applications that have been around
for 10 years are still protected.

There's already an unofficial filetype list; maybe someone could set up a
similar thing for other categories.
The admin overhead and risk of getting it wrong (with potentially messy
legal consequences, given that there are supposedly unused entries from some
of the former RISC OS big names who still exist in other markets) seems to
outweigh any advantages to ROOL doing it. It would effectively be like
vetting the source code all over again, I suspect.
> While I accept the need for confidentiality while software is in

AIUI, it's the stuff that never made it out that's the issue...
Indeed and we at ROOL could frankly do with less admin rather than more. And
one other side-effect is that people would get lazy with a public list and
simply check it and then release their software without bothering to
allocate it first. Therein lies madness.
PS: still no sign of an allocation request for "Sutdown" ;)
