2ND REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION - COMP.SYS.ACORN.* NEWSGROUP REORGANISATION
======================================================================

This is a revised RFD issued as a result of discussions in news.groups.
If you have any comment on the contents of this RFD please follow up
to news.groups. There are two changes to group names from the first RFD.

comp.sys.acorn.comm was changed to comp.sys.acorn.networking,
comp.sys.acorn.software was changed to comp.sys.acorn.apps,
semantic change concerning rename of comp.sys.acorn for group-advice@uunet.

----------

Group names : comp.sys.acorn.programmer, comp.sys.acorn.hardware,
comp.sys.acorn.apps, comp.sys.acorn.networking,
comp.sys.acorn.misc.

Status : Unmoderated
Distribution: world
Proposer : Andy Mell (am...@cup.cam.ac.uk)

Summary : CREATE five new newsgroups (as above)
DELETE comp.sys.acorn.tech
RENAME comp.sys.acorn TO comp.sys.acorn.misc

Posted to : news.announce.newgroups, news.groups, comp.sys.acorn.announce,
comp.sys.acorn, comp.sys.acorn.tech

Justification
-------------

Currently, the comp.sys.acorn newsgroup hierarchy consists of:

comp.sys.acorn
comp.sys.acorn.tech
comp.sys.acorn.announce
comp.sys.acorn.games
comp.sys.acorn.advocacy

The current configuration has its problems in that the main comp.sys.acorn
newsgroup currently carries most of the traffic, making it very hard
to separate out the articles that readers are interested in. The traffic
is currently of an appreciably large volume, and will only increase, thus
warranting a split into clear subject areas.

It is proposed to make the comp.sys.acorn newsgroups better defined in
terms of subject areas covered, renaming the main comp.sys.acorn group
to comp.sys.acorn.misc and deleting the comp.sys.acorn.tech group.

This should encourage the poster to consider which newsgroup to post to
rather than just posting to comp.sys.acorn - a policy which many of the
comp.sys.* newsgroups have followed.

To this end, the final configuration after reorganisation would be:

comp.sys.acorn.programmer
comp.sys.acorn.hardware
comp.sys.acorn.apps
comp.sys.acorn.networking
comp.sys.acorn.misc
comp.sys.acorn.announce
comp.sys.acorn.games
comp.sys.acorn.advocacy

(No change to comp.binaries.acorn and comp.sources.acorn - which are not
affected by this proposal)

The proposal has already been discussed in comp.sys.acorn at length and
there appears to be widespread support, it is now being made formal.

Charters
--------
comp.sys.acorn.programmer - For discussions of Acorn related programming
matters. This includes Acorn specific C, BASIC, Assembler (6502 or ARM)
Generic ARM code should be discussed in comp.sys.arm if the vote on this
group passes, otherwise in this newsgroup.

comp.sys.acorn.hardware - For discussions of hardware on Acorn machines
from both technical and user viewpoints

comp.sys.acorn.apps - For discussions of software packages and applications
on Acorn machines from a *user* viewpoint. There should be no programming
discussions in this group.

comp.sys.acorn.networking - For discussions of networking on Acorn machines,
this includes modems, tcp/ip software, WWW browsers, ethernet cards and
other comms hardware and software.

comp.sys.acorn.misc - For discussions which do not fit into any of the
above categories.

This RFD is being issued in accordance with the guidelines set forth in
the "How to create a new USENET newsgroup" FAQ posted regularly to
news.announce.newgroups. Please refer to this article if you have any
questions relating to the newsgroup creation process.

Unless the discussion indicates a need to resubmit a new RFD, the CFV
(Call for Votes), will be posted to news.announce.newgroups and
comp.sys.acorn.announce as soon as practical after January 4th 1995.
