I bought a Plextor PleXWriter 48/24/48A CD-RW drive in May, 2003
because they advertised it to be equipped with Roxio 5 which I had read
in magazines supported backups with their "Take Two" utility.

I didn't get "Take Two" with my free software and learned later hat it
had caused problems with large hard drives and Windows XP so instead of
fixing it Roxio dumped it with their upgrades from Roxio 5 to Roxio
5.1. I use Windows 98SE so "Take Two" may have worked for me had I
gotten it.

So I figured the next best thing would be to use Roxio 5 Basic's
DirectCD since the documentation claims that most CD readers can read
discs made with it provided UDF 1.5 is first made available. I only
made two backup CDs in this way and can only read them with my own
computer with the original Roxio 5 on it. I made a CD for a friend who
had upgraded to Roxio 6 Platinum in a fairly new Dell computer and his
computer refuses to read my backup CD.

Contrary to what Roxio's documentation claims, UDF 1.5 was not
automatically written to my backup CD and I can't find it anywhere as a
download. It is impossible to contact Roxio as they have no published
phone number except the one where you pay $35 per incident and their
Internet site claims that they no longer support Roxio version 5. In
other words, Roxio support is virtually nonexistant for me.

I did finally find what I thought would be a UDF reader at
http://softwareupdates.roxio.com/gm/updaters/ecdc/v7/emc7retail/drivers/updateudfreader_7.exe.

Here's what Roxio's web site had to say about this program on the day I
downloaded it (05/13/05):

UDF Reader

UDF VOLUME READER 7.1.0.95

This file is for users that do not own a copy of Easy CD Creator or
Easy Media Creator and just want to read discs that have been written
in UDF.

The UDF Reader is already included as a part of your Roxio Easy CD
Creator or Easy Media Creator installation, as such if you have any
versions of these you do not need this file. This update enables some
MultiRead CD-ROM drives to read UDF formatted CD-RW discs (such as
those written with DirectCD or Drag-to-Disc) under Windows 98 and 98
SE, Windows ME, and Windows 2000/XP. Once installed, you do not need to
take any special steps to activate the UDF Reader; it is constantly
active in the background, waiting for you to mount a UDF disc. This is
a free download for the convenience of users who do not own Roxio
software however no support is provided for this tool.

When I tried to run the program at the local college with a CD reader
only and no Roxio on it I got the following message:

"The Roxio UDFReader has not been detected" in a "Roxio UDFReader
Drivers Update Utility box."

With this the program abruptly terminated with no message to indicate
if anything was installed or not. I didn't have my Roxio Easy CD 5
DirectCD backup with me to test.

Is there any way I can get my friend's Dell running Windows XP and
Roxio Easy CD Platinum to read my backup cd which I created with Roxio
Easy CD version 5's DirectCD and UDF 1.5?

Is there any way to get my Roxio 5-created DirectCD backups to operate
the way that Roxio claims they will? I want any CD reader to be able
to read them to any Windows operating system for versatility and
transfer of data. I closed with UDF 1.5 because I used long file names
and paths for my data files and I didn't wish to rename my hundreds of
files to suit the ISO 9660 standard.

Please don't reply telling me what a terrible company Roxio is and that
their software is junk. I am already beginning to realize that based
on my own experience. Just let me know if I can do what I want to do
or it it is just a plain impossibility.

If you have any complaint about the software, then that complaint should be
addressed to Plextor, who supplied it. Plextor's support is usually good.
Neither Roxio, nor other software manufacturers, provide support for OEM
versions of their products. However, in this case the software seems to be
working - I don't suppose Plextor claimed it would work with other PCs.

These newsgroups are full of tales about the unreliability of packet writing
CD applications of which Direct CD is one. Do not use it for important
backups, but merely as a convenience. It is not at all unusual for packet
written discs only to be readable on the PC that wrote them - but ensure
that the disc is closed in order to give it more of a chance.

If you want a proper disc backup tool get Ghost or Acronis. Backup to hard
drive then *copy* to CDR.

Unless you have particularly unusual file names using the ISO standard will
not require you to rename your files - set the Joliet option.

Plextor's real software triumph is Plextools, but if you are a US purchaser
then this would not have been supplied and the download available is only an
upgrade that requires the original to be present. If you dig around there
are registry patches available to allow this software to be installed. It
doesn't do packets, but what it does do, it does very well indeed.

I figured out why they called it Take Two.

That's the number of extra strength pain relievers
you'll be needing after staying up all night
trying to make it work.

Mike Richter seems to be the only one

Not made clear is that applies to CD-RW media.

Sounds like update only.

Try Adaptec UDF Reader Driver v.5.1.1.213:

You must be using CD-R, not CD-RW, as you are talking about closing.

Also, the CD (udf session) is still open despite what DirectCD said --
this is a BUG that Mike Richter weaseling out as the "saving one step"
FEATURE and, moreover, the BUG is supposedly even sanctioned by the UDF
specification!!

Such cd's can only be read in a burner with DirectCD installed.

Copy the files to your hard disk and then burn using Easy CD Cremator,
not DirectCD. Or, format CD-RW by DirectCD and then copy the files to
it using drag&drop (DirectCD). (If you choose this option, get Verbatim
DataLifePlus UltraSpeed cd-rw.) Your friend should be able to read them
after installing the udf reader and updated. (XP machines shouldn't be
needing the udf reader had DirectCD conformed to the udf standard.)

As far as backing up, I found GHOST2002 does a great job imaging
directly to CD's either R only or r/w's. Never tried ACRONIS
before. I do my backing up to a Backpack epp port external
burner. Just dont do any formatting to the cd's before you
do the backup. Use them straight out of the box as is.

If one accepts the statement that UDF is insecure, (I assume that is
what is meant by "less stable") it would be absurd to use it.
Although I have seen many statements to the effect that data has been
lost on UDF disks I have not had that experience over the past 4 to 5
years. Most statement criticizing UDF are linked to long term data
storage. I don't use CD-RW media for long term storage only short
term therefore if it is true that data can be lost over time, that
does not bother me.

I have yet to see any proof that data written to UDF is any less secure
than to any other magnetic or optical media either in short or long
term. Further, I am surprised that reputable manufacturers would market
the CD-RW system if it could be shown it was inherently unreliable.

The snag with backing up directly to CD is that if you have a lot to back
up, you are tied to the desk feeding the writer with discs. DVD is better,
but neither are a substitute for an external hard drive - set it going and
leave it while you do something else, like eat or sleep:)

"Save one step"! But the supposed benefit of the "save" is this:

DCD 5.0 does not temporarily close CD's

For what it's worth, I had versions 4 & 5 when they were current and vendor
support was nonexistant for me, too.
