Announcing the release of Slackware Linux 3.0 ELF!

Slackware is a complete personal workstation operating system
based on the Linux kernel and an extensive collection of free
software and shareware from the net.

Here are just a few of the new features in Slackware 3.0:

ELF binary format!

This version uses the ELF binary format and shared libraries
for all major software included. There are a few binaries we
don't have the source code for (DOOM(tm), for example) that
still use the a.out binary format -- for those we provide a
a complete set of a.out libraries that assure complete
compatibility with any existing Linux application.

Updated development tools:

A professional-quality development system is provided for all
your programming needs. You can develop binaries in either the
ELF or a.out format. In the past it was extremely difficult
for most people to build shared libraries under Linux, especially
if they planned to share them with other Linux users. Using ELF,
you can build shared libraries as easily as static ones -- with
just a single load command!

Complete language support!

Almost any programming language you'd want to use is included,
ready to use. Here are some of the compilers and interpreters
you'll get:

GNU GCC 2.7.0 (C, C++, and Objective-C)
GNU G77-0.5.16 (Fortran-77)
f2c (Fortran-77 to C translator)
p2c (Pascal to C translator)
BASIC
Perl 4, and Perl 5.001m (with ELF dynamic loading)
Berkeley Yacc and GNU bison parser generators
flex 2.5.2 lexical analyzer generator
GNU Common LISP 2.1

Latest version of XFree86:

Slackware uses the X window system from XFree86 3.1.2, based on
X11R6. This adds support for several new high-performance video
chipsets such as the S3 968/868.

Intel Binary Compatibility Specification module:

The iBCS module allows many binaries from other OS's to run on Linux!
i386 BSD (386BSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, BSDI/386) - very experimental.
SVR4 (Interactive, Unixware, USL, Dell etc.)
SVR3 generic
SCO (SVR3 with extensions for symlinks and long filenames)
Wyse V/386 (SVR3 with extensions for symlinks)
Xenix V/386 (386 small model binaries only), Xenix 286

Updated Linux kernels:

In addition to the 1.2.13 bootdisks and kernels, 1.3.18 kernels are
also provided. This offers installation support for some new SCSI
cards (including the Adaptec 2940) and several new CDROM drives.

... and a whole lot more!

The latest version of Emacs, SLIP/PPP networking, Tcl/Tk script
languages, updated ncurses library (1.9.4), new video games (such
as Crack Dot Com's ABUSE for Linux), XView, UUCP, mailx, dip, PPP,
deliver, elm, pine, BSD sendmail, PCMCIA support, cnews, nn, tin,
trn, inn...

Slackware 3.0 is available from the central FTP site:

ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/linux/slackware-3.0

As well as many mirror sites throughout the world. If possible, try to
use a site near you. Use care with the mirror sites for the next several
days, as they might not have completely caught up with the new release.
I'm sure they'll catch up soon, though.

Other well-known mirror sites include:

ftp://sunsite.unc.edu:/pub/Linux/distributions/slackware
ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu:/pub/linux/distributions/slackware
ftp://uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu:/pub/systems/linux/distributions/slackware
