It can be lots of things with Usenet. Here are the things I've experienced.
Some servers will not propagate (distribute) messages cross-posted to a
moderated group. I.e., if you post to clax and alt.folklore.computers and
comp.arch, sometimes it won't show up everywhere. Some servers consider
html links or posts in html to be spam too and will kill the post. Some
servers will report groups as postable, although they aren't. It's the
general rights for the comp.* hierarchy. The newsgroup might not be
supported on his server even if they carry comp.* I.e., if he subscribed
to clax without checking if that server carries it, then he can post to the
group, but the posts disappear. Most free servers don't accept posts. Some
free servers accept posts, but they get discarded. I.e., he can post but
the posts disappear. Many free servers that accept posts don't propagate
posts. I.e., only that server will show his post, but no other servers do.
The server may propagate posts, but the servers it connects with don't have
a path to the major commercial Usenet providers. I.e., that server and some
others will show his post, but the majors and Google Groups never got it.
The server he posted to might not support email. In which case, it can't be
configured to relay posts as email for moderated groups, like clax. If his
email address is obscured, he won't receive an bounced email error message.
There are also public groups that don't accept posts from other servers
(incoming), but does propagates outgoing posts. You must post to a specific
server for the message to appear in the group. Etc.

I think I'm the one having to apologize for not being very informative. To
be honest, I did not even think anyone would actually read my test-message
...

The problem origionated from when this forums origional guardian died, and
his affairs where in the process of being taken over by others. For months
on end any post I made simply did not turn up in this newsgroup.

But it it seems those are of the past and I can post again. Being able to
respond makes reading a newsgroup much more interresting. :-)

So, it seems the feller posted to bintube and they allowed it to appear in
the group even though it doesn't contain the moderator's magic signature. I
guess giganews doesn't check for this signature when it copies articles from
bintube. However, the fact that it didn't get mirrored to aioe & others is
proof that an unauthorized article doesn't travel too far.

I guess, a person could write a program to occasionally scan for these rouge
articles and then channel them into the moderation system. This would help
to mitigate the distribution hurdle.

Nathan.

IIRC, Wolfgang Kern is the only one who has succeeded posting without it and
have it propagate for clax, at least somewhat recently. He'll have to let
us know if his backdoor is blocked now.

Yeah, at this point in time, i.e., with NNTP volume decreasing, I could see
a major NNTP host going to a pull system for rouge colored, or even rogue
posts. I.e., they could connect easily connect to all the remaining known
and open NNTP servers in the world, e.g., centralized NNTP. Replies to
rogue posts would never make it back to the posting server. The rogue
poster would need to read via a different server, or connect/post via the
centralized NNTP server.

Sorry I don't know about any backdoor nor if there were a door at all :)

he simply forged the king's royal seal. That was about 2 years ago, and we

How I remember the uncovered period of CLAX after Chuck decided to
enter a better world, access to the group only affected anonymous
posters. Herbert and me are/were always "definable authentic users",
even we both may have used a 'no reply' slot of a valid (prepaid)
usenet-account.
So behind my spam-saving news-dummy seen here is a respondible person
(that means me yet) which could be ether sued or adored at any time.

No, we didn't use any backdoors nor other tricks to make our posts
visible.

Lady 'windela' may suffer from aging, and I'm not sure if Herbert still
work at University of Berlin, only he can tell about any changes.

I always appreciated his detailed knowledge, even he often tried to
convince us to take his personal Motorola-x86 Syntax as given fact.

Yeah, Herbert did, once, "forge the King's Royal Seal". His mistake was
to cc one of the (moderated) groups the "Big-8" guys use! I don't think
anybody here would care, but "they" were irritated. I don't think "they"
would cut off his access for one violation (a very helpful bunch of
guys/gals - they were delighted that there were some folks who wanted to
keep a group going!) but they threatened to, and probably have the
"clout" to do so.

That's sad news.

But that's good news!

He makes a (fairly) good case for it being more "logical". The only
"problem" with it is that nobody but Herbert uses it... Not his fault.

I didn't forge anything (everybody is free to add an "approved" line
to the header of his posting). And the "Big-8" guys are nothing but
a paper tiger. Usenet is (or was, as long as it existed) a distributed
system and only the news administrator decides which groups and posting
are accepted. And as long as there were commercial news providers, they
did what the paying customer and not the "Big-8" guys wanted. But this
news providers disappeared (even Microsoft gave up the the complete
microsoft.* hierarchy) and so I have to use a free server which
doesn't accept the approved line.

They don't have the power to cut off anything.

After 16 years of continuously work she was allowed to retire.

But nothing new since years, assembly is dead as usenet. Sad but true.
And with 64-bit Windows even the DOS compatibility was lost.

Her name was "Mistress" not "Windela" and with the exception of the
cache rams, she was still ok.

But NASM could assembly it. Maybe I should try to use the improved
macro system of NASM to make NASM full Windela compatible.

Okay. Probably not a good topic for extensive discussion here...

Maybe. I don't recall what the issue was, that Nasm's macro system
wouldn't allow full Lindela/Windela compatibility. Nasm's macros are
becoming more powerful/flexible... in fits and starts. Bugs keep
creeping in with the "old stuff". It's "in progress"...

Would there be some advantage to this? Do you think more people would
adopt your syntax if Nasm would assemble it? Seems to me that
Daniela/Lindela/Windela assembled it just fine. As long as we get the
correct bytes ("Wolfgang's syntax"), everything upstream from that is a
matter of taste, IMO.

Anyway, too bad to hear that "Mistress" is retired - although she
deserves it, she served you well! Glad to hear that you're still with
us! You've been a big help!

Best,
Frank
