I stepped outside between 3:35 and 3:50 this morning (Thursday, May 22nd), and was pleased to hear the best spring night flight I have ever heard in Colorado. Location: Lafayette, Boulder County.
The very first bird I heard sounded very good for Gray-cheeked Thrush. But I wouldn't say it was perfect for Gray-cheeked, and I'll be the first to point out that some flight calls of Swainson's and Gray-cheeked Thrushes can be quite similar.
Speaking of Swainson's Thrushes, I heard about 30 during that 15-minute intervals.
Also 2 Lark Buntings, 1 Bobolink, 1 Lark Sparrow, and about 5 Chipping Sparrows.
There were a lot of "possibles" and "probables" up there, too. About 5 were what I would ordinarily call fairly certain Yellow Warblers, but with all the Blackpoll Warblers this spring, one cannot be certain. I heard one note that was probably a Pheucticus grosbeak but that could have been a Hermit Thrush. I think I heard several Clay-colored Sparrows, too, and 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler, and 1 or 2 Wilson's Warblers.
And there other sparrow/warbler notes--more of them warblers than sparrows, I believe.
Anyhow, a great flight. As I said, my best spring flight yet in Colorado. And it certainly makes good sense: After this long northerly flow (many days now), we're finally having a good southeasterly flow, and doppler radar, sure enough, is showing "base reflectivity" and "base velocity" that are perfectly consistent with a good flow of migrants heading northwest across eastern Boulder County.
Just heard something redstart-ish outside the window, so I'm going out now for more.
