On the day that Bradley Manning is sentenced -- widely expected to be either today (Tuesday) or tomorrow (Wednesday) -- people around the world will respond with outrage against the persecution of this courageous whistleblower.

Here in Chicago, the emergency response action will be at 6 PM at 'The Bean' in Millennium Park (Michigan Avenue & Washington Blvd, in the park), on whichever day his sentence is announced.

Instead of prosecuting the U.S. soldiers who gleefully murdered civilians in the infamous "collateral murder" video released by Manning, President Obama is trying to put Manning away for life. Instead of prosecuting Bush administration officials who promoted illegal and immoral torture, Obama recently appointed one of them to be head of the FBI.

But he's not totally getting away with it.

The fact that both President Obama and Sec't of State John Kerry have felt compelled to personally defend the law-breaking by their NSA shows that they are not winning the battle of public opinion.

A recent poll showed 55% of Americans viewed Snowden as a whistleblower, while only 34% considered him a traitor [http://www.usnews.com/news/blogs/washington-whispers/2013/08/01/edward-snowden-receives-asylum-in-russia-poll-shows-americans-sympathetic-to-nsa-whistle-blower]

As time and again Snowden's releases prove that Obama administration spokespeople are lying to the American people, public sympathy for whistleblowers like Snowden and Manning increases, and Obama increasingly looks as corrupt and unprincipled as his predecessor.

While we are not so naive as to expect Manning's #1 persecutor (who pronounced him guilty even before his trial!) to pardon him, it is the only just demand to raise of Obama and his successor.
