I just want to share with all of you my speech to the  students in the National DREAM Graduation celebrated in Washington D.C. on July 20th 2010. It was an honor to be there.

Buenas tardes.
Es un orgullo y un honor estar enfrente de ustedes, inmigrantes jóvenes, estudiantes que han decidido  luchar para cambiar no solo su futuro sino el de miles de jóvenes inmigrantes de este país. No tengo duda de que los jóvenes en todo el mundo están siguiendo con esperanza, respeto y admiración este movimiento que ustedes han iniciado y que quedara grabado en la historia.
Soy la madre de dos de las jóvenes que han estado participando en este movimiento estudiantil y como madre no podría sentirme más orgullosa de ver a mis hijas luchando por su futuro y el futuro de todos los inmigrantes. Y les puedo asegurar que si sus padres pudieran haber estado aquí, estarían compartiendo con ustedes el mismo orgullo, respeto y admiración.
 Cuando salimos de nuestros países lo hicimos con la esperanza de buscar un mejor futuro para nuestros hijos. ¡Cuando íbamos a imaginar que ese futuro se tornaría en pesadilla por tantos años! y que nuestros hijos en vez de ver un futuro mejor quedarían atrapados en este país que les niega el más elemental de los derechos básicos del ser humano: el derecho a la educación.
Las familias inmigrantes salimos de nuestros países buscando una vida mejor para nuestros hijos, nunca quisimos que vinieran a sufrir, salimos en busca de oportunidades pensando en ustedes. Verlos hoy en día decididos a no dar marcha atrás, es continuar con  nuestros sueños. Su lucha es nuestra lucha, porque el sacrificio que hicimos al salir de nuestros países habría sido en vano si no fuera por la esperanza que hoy nos brinda este movimiento.
Ustedes, jóvenes inmigrantes, han decidido venir aquí, al corazón de Estados Unidos para que sus voces se escuchen, para luchar por sus sueños y los sueños de sus padres y de sus comunidades. La lucha por el DREAM Act ha formado una nueva generación de líderes jóvenes que será una fuerza importante en la lucha por la reforma migratoria.
No hay marcha atrás, lo que han aprendido ustedes durante todos estos años de lucha nadie se los podrá quitar. Por ese solo hecho ya ganamos. Es nuestra victoria. La comunidad inmigrante tiene ahora a su lado una nueva generación de líderes jóvenes que continuaran luchando por hacer de esta nación una nación donde los derechos básicos del ser humano y de la comunidad inmigrante se respeten.
Quienes pretenden poner la lucha de nuestros hijos, de nuestros jóvenes como una lucha antagonica a la lucha por la reforma migratoria cometen un grave error, caen en el juego de aquellos que saben que dividiendo a nuestras comunidades podrán continuar haciendo daño a este país y a la comunidad inmigrante con propuestas como la ley de Arizona que abiertamente promueve la discriminación racial.
 
Los jóvenes inmigrantes están pidiendo a los líderes en el congreso y a nuestros lideres políticos pasar el DREAM Act inmediatamente como un proyecto de ley independiente, yo les digo a esos lideres y a los legisladores  que nosotros apoyamos plenamente a nuestros hijos, que también tienen el apoyo de sus maestros, de las universidades, de sindicatos y de muchas otras organizaciones. Nuestros hijos, nuestros jóvenes no están solos, los apoyamos plenamente.
Estamos comprometidos con esta lucha porque el DREAM act  será un primer paso en esa larga jornada de lucha que iniciamos hace ya varios anos hacia una reforma migratoria justa que se base y reconozca en el trabajo, la educación y  las aportaciones de los inmigrantes a este país.
Ustedes son los futuros Doctores, sociólogos, historiadores, escritores, perioditas, abogados…son el futuro y la esperanza de cambio también para esta nación.
Que vivan los estudiantes!




Good afternoon.
I am proud to be in front of you, young immigrants, students who have decided to fight to change not only your future but also the future of thousands of young immigrants in this country. I have no doubt that young people around the world are following this movement with hope, respect and admiration. This movement will be written in the history of the United States.
My two daughters have been participating in this movement and as a mother I could not be more proud to see my children fighting for their future and the future of all immigrants. And I can assure you that if your parents could have been here, would be sharing with you the same pride, respect and admiration.
 When we left our countries we were hoping to find a better future for our children. We never imagine that the future would become a nightmare for so many years! We never imagine our children’s future would be trapped in this country that denied to them the most basic of basic human right: the right to education.
We, Immigrant families, left our countries seeking a better life for our children. We never wanted see you suffer, we came  searching for opportunities and a better life for our children. Seeing you today determined to continue the struggle is to continue with our dreams. Your  struggle is our struggle, because the sacrifice we made to leave our country would be in vain if not for the hope that this movement gives us today.
You ,young immigrants, have decided to come here, the heart of America to make your voices heard, to fight for your dreams and the dreams of your parents and your communities. The fight for the DREAM Act has formed a new generation of young leaders that will be a major force in the fight for immigration reform.
No turning back. What you have learned during all these years of struggle nobody will take it away. For that fact alone, we already won. It is our victory. The immigrant community has  now a new generation of young leaders that will continue fighting to make this nation a nation where basic human rights and respect for the immigrant community will be a reality.
Those who claim that the fight of  our children is against the struggle  for immigration reform are making a big mistake, they are been trapping  in the game of those who know that dividing our communities will allow them to continue harming  this country with proposals such as the Arizona law that openly promotes racial discrimination.

Young immigrants are asking congressional leaders and our political leaders immediately pass the DREAM Act as an stand alone bill.  I say to those leaders and legislators that we fully support our children, who also have the support of teachers, universities, trade unions and many other organizations. Our children, our youth are not alone, we fully support them
We are committed to this struggle because the DREAM act will be a first step in this long journey of struggle that began several years ago for  a just immigration reform that recognize the work, education and the contributions of immigrants to this country.
You are the future and hope of change for this nation.
