Hola!

Occupy el Barrio is hosting a Carnaval (parade) for April 7th. The morning parade of April 7th is our chance to celebrate our own cultures while the afternoon festival celebrates that the people of Chicago, from all the neighborhoods and communities are united and form an undetainable force.

Throughout the parade we are going to make targeted stops at Benito Juarez, Kramer smelter, the Rudy Lozano library, RadioArte, and BofA to draw attention to the privatization of public services and those responsible for injuring,
criminalizing and profiting off of our communities.

Our last stop, to take place around 1pm, will be at the MCC downtown and we would love as many people, hoods and barrios as possible to to join us there because we know there is nothing more terrifying for them than all of us coming together.

Just bring your signs, banners, shirts, drums and, most of all, people this Sat. at 11am to show the City that we stand united in this fight.

We invite all to become part of the parade on April 7th without needing to join or form a group. It is a parade of el barrio and all are welcome.

April Seventh Project:

Carnaval del Barrio

What is it?

A spring parade that reflects our rights and our fights, our creativity and our dreams. There will be danzantes, rap and rock artists, mimes, clowns, butterflies, art, theater and food. We are open to including interested groups and we invite all to come out and join us in the parade on April 7th.

Where and When?

Pilsen, Saturday April 7th, 11am-1pm.
We will gather at 11am at Benito Juraez Park, 2150 S. Laflin Ave, the parade will then head to 18th St with a public music festival in Plaza Tenochtitlan at noon.

Why April 7th?

This day has been named Chicago Spring in honor of the Arab Spring, which last year inspired freedom movements in the Middle East and across the world. From Madison, to Greece, to Chile and to the Occupy Movement in the US, people have been coming

together to fight for our right of a dignified life, a government that truly responds to the people and economic justice in wake of the limitless greed of the 1%.

Carnaval of el Barrio will take place in the morning here in Pilsen followed by a spring music and workshop festival downtown at 2pm where we will then gather and unite with all the communities of Chicago for a celebration of arts and city wide solidarity.

The morning parade of April 7th is our chance to celebrate our own cultures whilst the afternoon festival celebrates that the people of Chicago, from all the neighborhoods and communities are united and form an undetainable force.

How can you participate?

There are several ways:
one- come in the morning of April 7th and join the parade;
two- join a group that is already planned (mimes, clowns, butterflies);
three- organize your own group in relation to the idea of the Carnaval (theater groups, dancers, musicians, schools etc.);
four- build a float or wear a costume that relates to the idea of Carnaval;
five- help with organizing the Carnaval of el Barrio: attend our open meetings tuesdays, 6:30pm, Plaza Tenochtitlan (18 y Blue Island).  Rain or shine, we will be there.
six- support the Carnaval of el Barrio with food, art materials, your signature, water etc.

We invite all to become part of the parade on April 7th without needing to join or form a group. It is a parade of el barrio and all are welcome.
