Campaign Kick-Off

Led by Cub fans and Community organizers

Cubs fans have long been pushing the team to move Spring training because Florida would be better for building a winning team.  Now Arizona’s failure to provide funding to keep the Cubs, choosing instead to pass the most radical anti-immigrant law in the country,SB1070, is the final proof that Florida is the better choice for our team.

Join us on Friday May 14th, 2010 @ 12noon, as we launch the start of our campaign to ask the Chicago Cubs to move their spring training camp from Arizona to Florida.

Top 10 Reasons Why the Cubs Should Spring Train in Florida

1. Of the last 34 World Series champion teams, 30 held Spring Training in Florida (16 in the last two decades).

2. Florida has an approved budget of between $7 and $15 million dollars on top of a guaranteed $50million in private funding and three potential Spring Training locations. Arizona failed to even pass a stadium budget.

3. Arizona’s dry air is bad for a pitcher’s shoulder. Florida’s humid conditions are much more suited for a pitcher and hitter’s joints. Leaving Arizona for Florida would reduce the Cubs injuries.

4. Baseball is America’s past time, but Arizona is not honoring American values. Arizona is undermining American principles of freedom and equal treatment.

5. The Arizona Law SB1070 discriminates on the basis of “reasonable suspicion.” Us Cubs fans look suspicious enough without legalizing racial profiling.

6.  Reverend Jesse Jackson and Karl Rove agree! : The Arizona law is the one issue that oversteps the boundaries of American civil liberties and should be actively petitioned.

7. MLB publicly stands in opposition to Senate Bill 1070. Players Association executive director Michael Weiner represents the players and American Baseball in his disgust at the Arizona immigration law.

8. Florida Spring Training draws on average 6,700 fans per game, this is over  2,000 extra fans per game, compared to Arizona’s Cactus League.

9. The Cubs fan base currently has the third largest percentage of out of state fans based in the MLB (behind the Yankees and Red Sox).

10. The recreational activities are far superior in Florida and draw 86.8 million visitors every year. This is almost three times the 32.4 million tourists Arizona draws.
