U-Chicago students launch Statewide Week of Action in support of Undocumented Students
Students asks the University to become an Equal Rights University by publicly stating its support for a pathway for legalization of undocumented students along with other commitments
Chicago, IL- The University of Chicago student group, UChicago Coalition for Immigrant Rights (UCCIR), will be holding a press conference on Tuesday May 18th on the quads of the University of Chicago campus (5600 S. University) to address the growing push for comprehensive immigration reform with an emphasis on the rights of undocumented students for equal access to higher education.
Since the march to Washington, D.C. on March 20th, with a significant attendance of individuals from Illinois, various groups across the nation have been pressing the importance of their need for comprehensive immigration reform on a national level. At the University of Chicago, a student led group has arisen that is making concerted efforts to push for greater aid for undocumented students wishing to attend college and for the university to make a public statement of support for creating a path towards legalization of undocumented students.
Nearly 2 million undocumented minors reside in the U.S. and each year 65,000 students graduate from American high schools without having the realistic possibility to attend college. This is the problem that youth and their advocacy groups are hoping to change through a specific push for greater aid and declared support by educational institutions across Chicago.
This conference will serve to announce the details of the efforts being carried out by students at the University as well as to announce student demands for support for the DREAM Act, and increased and improved services for undocumented students admitted to educational institutions.
Speakers will be representing UCCIR, Immigrant Youth Justice League, Harold Washington College and Northeastern Illinois University.
