OK MCN READERS,
I have been reflecting on all the feedback coming my way, and decided to answer some of the comments in this fashion:
Just a review of some recent past history -
June 2005, HR 4437 is introduced into the House by Sensenbrenner and Peter King of NY.
NOBODY IN THE COMMUNITY KNOWS ABOUT THIS!!! ABSOLUTELY NO ONE!!!
Oh sure, the Hacendados knew, i.e, ICIRR, NCLR, LULAC, National Immigration etc.... they knew - but not US!!!
Nope. The prevailing wisdom out of the Hacendados in Washington DC was that the Sensenbrenner bill was "TOO EXTREME" and would never pass in the House.
Fast forward to December 16, 2005. With the assistance of then Congressman Rahm Emmanuel (now White House Chief of Staff for Obama), HR 4437 is passed in the U.S. House of Reps, with the support of 13 democrats. One of those being Dan Lipinski of Illinois' 3rd district.
Of course WE found about it after the fact due to Congressman Luis Gutierrez blowing the whistle on Rahm Emmanuel.
Now after several press conferences denouncing HR 4437. Everyone went home to enjoy the holidays. I was asking people, "what next?" "We have to do something more!" And of course the prevailing wisdom from the Hacendado camp was that the Sensenbrenner bill would "die in the Senate" because "it was too extreme."
Now, that mentality did not sit right with me. Unlike the Hacendados who were willing to trust the majority extreme right wing republican party that controlled the U.S. Congress - I DID NOT!!
I held to the opinion that George W. Bush was in fact a "closet Minuteman" and should the Senate pass the bill - he would sign it into law. In fact, I wrote this warning in the MCN.
But, the majority opinion was that HR 4437 would "die in the Senate".
So I launched a campaign via the Mayan Calendar News - I went nation wide as much as I could - ranting and raving against the Sensenbrenner bill. I went VIRAL!
Locally I approached Omar Lopez, a respected community activist and leader and exhorted him to take the leadership role in convening a protest demonstration against HR 4437. Together, He and I went and spoke with other immigration activists - BUT - we ran into this same mentality - "it won't pass in the Senate".
Omar went and spoke with the more grass roots immigration activists; He met with the leadership of Casa Aztlan, PRD, PRI, and the PAN - they said "sure, go ahead and organize something." And he did. He sent out a Convocatorio for an ad hoc committee to fight against HR 4437.
Through the MCN, I publicized and circulated this Convocatorio all over the "place". I gangstered every email address I could - and sent the message out there.
A similar dynamic was taking place out in the West Coast and Southwest. A meeting was held in Riverside California of immigration rights activists. Emma Lozano of Centro Sin Fronteras attended that conference. By the time she returned to Chicago, the first steering committee meeting agaisnt HR 4437 was set. Emma attended this meeting, shared with all of us the summary of the meeting held in California, and told us all that that Conference was calling for a national day of mobilization for March 10th, 2006.
The Steering Committee against HR 4437 decided to support this call for a national day of mobilization, and although that left us only 23 days to organize - WE took on the challenge.
We hoped for a turn out of five thousand (5,000) people, considering the time element involved, and that it was the middle of winter.
Meanwhile, LULAC, had their national convention in Mexico City around the same time that all these other meetings were taking place - and they decided to call for a march on Washington for October of 2006!!!!
Well Gente, we all know what happened. Once the word got out that Chicago was taking it to the streets - people everywhere began to mobilize. Churches, Soccer Leagues, high school students, College and university students, factory workers, MERCHANTS AND THEIR EMPLOYEES, and people from all across the mid-west and the central USA began to Mobilize to come to Chicago to fight against HR 4437.
SENIOR CITIZENS, THE DISABLED AND ELDERLY, FAMILIES - the multitude that turned out on March 10, 2006 was astounding - absolutely amazing.
New leaders emerged in this mobilization effort - Lulu Espinoza from Aurora, IL - Margaret Carrasco in Waukegan, IL, Cristobal Cavazos out in DuPage county - and even Sonny Garcia from Bloomington IL.
And Elvira Arellano......
You all know the rest of the story after that - my point is this - is that if the "conventional wisdom" of the HACENDADOS had prevailed - NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED OR.......IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED TOO LATE!!!!
Timing is everything!!!
WE defeated HR 4437 - then WE snuffed out Hagel/Martinez, WE decimated the STRIVE ACT, etc.....
So since March 10, 2006...there have been a series of IMPORTANT AND DECISIVE VICTORIES!!!!
But, the WAR still wages. The final battle has yet to be fought. And even though the odds are stacked against US.....the battle is being fought.....propaganda wars....political campaigns....the WAR is waging on!!!!
WE MUST DEFEAT DAN LIPINKSKI ON FEBRUARY 2ND 2010 - WE MUST - WE MUST, WE MUST!!!!
It is possible...it can be done.....and when we achieve this victory - WE WILL TRIGGER A POLITICAL TSUNAMI THROUGHOUT THE LAND!!!!
So gente, are you ready for this new phase of the battle? Please enjoy your holiday - recharge your batteries......then ....COME AND WAGE THE BATTLE ANEW!!!!
ELECT JORGE MUJICA 3RD DISTRICT CONGRESSMAN IN THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY ON FEBRUARY 2ND 2010!!!
The clarion call has been made - the trumpet is counding - "Mexicanos al Grito de Guerra!!!"
