Labor, Immigrant, and Community groups announce plan for March and Rally on may Day

WHAT:            Press conference announcing plans for a joint labor and immigrant march and rally for May 1, 2012—May Day, the International Day of the Working Class.

WHO:            Representatives from the Chicago labor movement, immigrant rights movement, faith community, student movement, Occupy Chicago, and other community organizations

WHEN:            Wednesday, April 11th at Noon

WHERE:            Haymarket Monument, 163 N Desplaines St., Chicago, IL

The Chicago May Day 2012 Organizing Committee is calling for a joint labor-immigrant march and rally on May 1, 2012 in the tradition of both the mass immigrant rights marches of 2006 and the long standing celebration of May Day as international workers day. Participants will assemble at noon in Union Park (1501 W Randolph St), step off at 1pm, march to downtown, and rally at 3pm.

This May Day will mark a historic coming together of Chicago’s working class in the face of the austerity measures imposed by Mayor Emmanuel. Our communities are struggling against anti-immigrant attacks, detention and deportation; union busting and cuts to workers’ wages and benefits; cuts to public services including education, health care, and transportation; and racist violence, police brutality, and mass incarceration. Propelled by the Occupy Movement, increased labor militancy, and strong community organizations, leaders have stepped up all across Chicago to demand the city we deserve.   On May 1, we will march in solidarity, documented and undocumented, students and workers, from all the neighborhoods of Chicago around the following demands:

Stop the Attacks on Workers and Unions!

No Cuts, No Austerity, and Tax the 1%!

Jobs for All and No to E-verify

End Deportations, End Racism, and End the New Jim Crow.
