Health Care for All – The struggle continues!
Friday, June 22, at 10:30 AM
Advocate Christ Medical Center, 4440 W. 95 St. Chicago

Members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission in Little Village are announcing a victory after a 21-day hunger strike: Loyola Medical Center, Rush Hospital and UIC Medical Center have agreed to offer life-saving treatment to two brothers, Martin Hernandez and  Jorge Mariscal, who were previously denied care based on immigration status.

The hunger strikers celebrate their victory by continuing the fight on behalf of all who do not have access to health care based on immigration status or inability to pay.  Join them on Friday, June 22 at 10:30 AM for a candlelight vigil in front of Advocate Christ Medical Center at 4440 W. 95 St. at 10:30am to denounce the hospital’s negligence toward patients who lack financial resources or legal documents

Hospitals routinely deny patient care based on immigration status and inability to pay: in a profit-driven medical system, only certain lives are deemed to be worth saving. The City of Chicago recently closed six mental health clinics and patients have been fighting for months to restore those essential services. We believe that health care, including mental health services, are a human right. Access to such services should not be denied due to immigration status or ability to pay. Struggles such as this hunger strike and the Mental Health Movement are linked, and are both pointing out the lack of dedication to providing the basic right of health and healing for all human beings.
