Days after Arizona Governor signed anti-immigrant SB 1070 into law
Hundreds to Hold Vigil at Detention Center to Demand Immediate End to Deportations

Student, Labor, Civic, and Faith Communities urge federal solutions for broken immigration system

What: A vigil organized by immigrant rights advocates at Broadview Detention Center calls for President Barack Obama to issue an executive order ending deportations of undocumented immigrants and raids on communities. In addition, this action takes place in solidarity with immigrants in Arizona as a response to the passage of SB 1070, one of the harshest anti-immigrant bills in history. The vigil signals the lengths that the movement will go to to stop the destruction and separation of families in Arizona, Illinois, and throughout the U.S. if the April 30th deadline for legislative action by the senate on immigration deadline is not met as enforcement continues.

Who: Participants represent the broad spectrum of the immigrant rights movement and will include community leaders with relatives facing deportation, labor organizers, naturalized citizens, students and immigrant youth, as well as faith leaders from the Catholic, Jewish and Evangelical traditions.

Vigil participants include Alderman Ricardo Muñoz (22nd Ward); Pastor Freddy Santiago (Fellowship Flock Church),  Father Chuck Dahm (St Pius Catholic Parish), Emma Lozano (Familia Latina Unida), Joshua Hoytt (ICIRR), Laura Garza (Unite Here), Jane Ramsey (JCUA), Rabbi Joshua Slater (SWOP), Father Brendan Curran (Saint Pius Catholic Parish), and Father Michael Pfleger (Saint Sabina Catholic Church).

When: Monday April 26th 7:00 - 9:00 pm, Opening vigil and stories
Tuesday April 27th, 5:30 – 8:00 am, Morning watch and closing action

Where: 1930 Beach St, Broadview, IL. 60155

Why: Chicago stands in solidarity with immigrants in Arizona resisting the passage of SB 1070. This law is the worst example of anti-immigrant legislation surging across the U.S, mandating local law enforcement to inquire into any person's legal status if they have "reasonable suspicion" that they may be in the country undocumented. This is the direct consequence of the failure by the Obama Administration to work for immigration reform and instead deporting almost 400,000 people during their first year in office. Students, labor, community and faith leaders are tired of the inaction from government leaders. This policy of continuous enforcement without a path to legalization has called into question Obama's commitment to immigrant communities.

Visuals: Event participants to bring photographs and testimonies from loved ones who are undocumented and/or facing deportation. Candle-light vigil. Tuesday 6-8 am, vigil-light participants keep watch as federal vehicles transport detained immigrants for deportation.

Endorsing organizations include: Immigrant Youth Justice League (IYJL),  Jewish Council on Urban Affairs (JCUA), Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), West Suburban Action Project (PASO), Familia Latina Unida, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Latino Organization of the Southwest (LOS), Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Priests for Justice for Immigrants, Centro Sin Fronteras, Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP), and 8th Day Center for Justice.
